Title: some pics and questions
Post by: bcraig on October 08 2018 11:01:43 PM MDT
I just got a Glock 21 Gen 4 and bought a Storm Lake 10 MM conversion barrel,6inches long.

Shot once out of my Truck today ,Just made sure the Muzzle was outside the cab.

I was using Underwood 180 XTP ammo.

Cases were ejecting upward and to the rear at about a 135 degree angle from the ejection port
and landed about 4-5 feet away although I do not know how high they went before landing on the ground.

With the shot that was fired with me sitting inside the truck and her sitting in the passenger side seat of the 2013 Dodge Ram quad cab the case hit her in forehead .

Rest of the shots(3 more) were obviously shot while I was standing outside the truck !

I Inspected the cases and found a scratch on the cases with what could be called a minor cut that I could barely catch a fingernail on at the top of the case mouths.
Also the case rims felt rough when rotated.
The primers were flattened and the primers on the 4 cases had a tiny amount of extrusion (again where a fingernail could barely catch the extrusion)and also showed the rectangle of the firing pin slot on the breechface.

I took the slide off and saw a tiny bit of battering of the frame(although I do not know how much is attributable to first firing or ?).

Is this normal?
Do I need a Heavier RSA?

If I do need a heavier RSA is there any issues with using this one https://www.ndzperformance.com/NDZ-22LB-Guide-Rod-BLK-Adapter-Gen-4-20-21-40-41-p/ndz-gra-g4-blk-g20-gl22.htm
or a ?

Check it chamber of the barrel to make sure it doesn't have any debris or a flaw from machining that could be marking the cases.  More than likely it could be something done during loading, or packaging that made the scar.

With the aftermarket barrels you need to insure they are fully in battery as they sit in the slide.  Insure that the slide and barrel are clean where the mating surfaces are to provide the best lockup in battery.  Check that it is not sticking and dropping in and out easily.

The ejection issue could be because the position of the ejector for the G-21 for 45ACP, striking the smaller 10mm casing closer to its edge.

The recoil system of the Gen 4 guns are different than previous generations and if you change, be sure the one you get is compatible with the gen4 you have...  22 lbs is the weight spring I use in my G-20 SF, but mine is a noncaptive setup.

What are advantages and disadvantages between a Captive setup and a non captive setup?

Here is another pic of the barrel Hood, what in the heck could be causing the vertical scratches on the Hood ?
They were not there before firing the pistol

Thank you much

The noncaptive allows quick changes of the springs the drawback is the loose spring can slip out of your hand or launch the recoil rod across the room or if in the field out into the dirt or grass.  LOL
But I also found that it also helps with added spring tension at lockup and the spring is rated at its full reward travel just as the slide lock is reached.
Using this link you can see the measurements taken with my G-20 and G-29 with the non captive vs. the factory setup
