My new EDC / deer pistol is a glock 29 , took it on its first trip this weekend. Everything stock on this gun except sights. SIG v crown 180 , 35 yards ...broke both shoulders and came to rest at hide on far side. The deer never took a step and im pretty impressed , however would like better penetration. I think im going to switch to the 200 xtp. Anybody have a good deer load for that bullet? I chose the sig because locally all i could get was 155 xtps and time was an issue.
Yep, Underwood's 180, and 200gr have served me well. You may also want to consider UW's 150gr Extream Hunter
Morning KOTIMAKI, yes, if you are talking 150-250lb Whitetail, I would say UW's 200gr XTP would work well
Thanks
Ken
Depending on size of the deer, sounds like the Sig VCrown did excellent job.
I've hit deer in similar location with rifle and found bullet under skin in same place.
Underwood was a good answer for 200gr XTP.
If you just insist on two holes (entrance & exit) Underwood 200gr Hardcast
may be the solution your looking for.
Congratulations!! I would love to see a picture of the recovered V-crown!

Yep, for sure two holes with the hard cast 😀
Rojo's thoughts on the VCrown would be a great option as well, as they have great expansion according to the tests I have seen
OP, just my 2C, but if you shot the deer with a compact G29 and the bullet went through both shoulders and stopped under the skin on the off side and the deer was DRT, what more could you want? I have had 1 ounce 12 gauge slugs not perform that good.
I am a bowhunter first, so I get wanting 2 holes for a better track job, and I shoot a Glock 40 with Underwood 200 gr. XTP loads, but after seeing field reports on how well the 180 gr. loads work on deer, I am thinking of switching to loads that are easier to find in stores here, such as the Sig 180 gr. V-Crown and Hornady Custom 180 gr. XTP.
Evening tcecil, as with any of these loads, shot placement is paramount. In all reality, I think any of these loads would get the desired results given you are not stretching your distance or level of skill
Ken
Agreed, shot placement is key. I was just noting that it seems that the OP's pistol/load combo performed awesome, so wanting a heavier bullet would probably not yield much better results. If the shot was placed behind the shoulder in the lower 1/3 of the body, the bullet will probably miss the heavier shoulder bones, but get the top of the heart and the bottom of both lungs before exiting the body. The deer will run away's, but will probably drop within sight if hunting from a treestand. Deer usually do not go far when shot through both lungs. Shoot just the heart out and the deer will run farther, faster in my experience.
I am a big fan of heavy for caliber projos, and I will always opt for a heavy bullet. However, most stores typically do not carry heavy loads in 10mm (200 gr.) or .44 magnum (300 gr.), thus you have to typically mail order those, and pay the high shipping cost. The performance of the Sig V-Crown 180 and other better quality 180 gr. loads that are more readily available outweigh the need for the heavier projo's for deer and similar sized game.
As usual, YMMV.
Underwood's 200gr XTP is an awesome rd
Just some additonal thoughts, if you look at ballistic gelatin tests on line and the loading data excel spreadsheet posted in the reloading forum on this website, you will see, generally speaking, the 200 grain XTP will outpenetrate the 180 XTP. It may only be by a few inches but that may mean the difference between a bullet that stops under the hide on the far side and one that exiits.
If you absolutely want exit wounds and deep penetration, then as has already been stated by Kenk, hardcast is the way to go. Those hardcast boolits with a WFN design will make the widest wound channel. I don't shoot factory loads, so I can't recommend a manufacturer for WFN loads but for handloading, I use both the Montana Bullet Works 200 grain WFNPB and Beartooth 200 grain WFNGC. The Montana version shoots more accurately in my pistols. Good huntin!
Agreed, kinetic energy is always higher downrange with heavier bullets, resulting in deeper penetration.
Here in Indiana, we are hamstrung by law restricting us to hollow point ammo for hunting. If the OP is not restricted by law like me, he can take advantage of the heavier hardcast loads for hunting.
Yep, for me Understand's 180 and 200gr XTP have worked well fo 150-250lb Whitetail, If I was in bear county, I would use their 200-220 hardcast
Ken
In all reality, UW's 155gr XTP would bring one down just fine with the correct placement, l just like their 180, and 200

Totally agree. If I was in the northern climates, where the deer are typically thicker bodied, I would use a hardcast 220 gr. load as well. A big deer in Indiana might go 200 lbs. on the hoof where I hunt, which is mostly National Forest ground. Deer in the Central and Northern end of the state will typically be bigger as a result of the better food source that corn and beans offer.

I've since made the switch to 200 gr xtp , fairly stout load hope to do a little terminal testing. Will update then.
That V-Crown projectile looks mean and like a textbook example of what a spent bullet should look like.
I'm a big fan of the 200gr XTP and utilized it to great result in full sized handguns. Have noticed in ballistic testing that the 200gr XTP requires some decent velocity to function optimally.
Good luck!
Seems like the V-Crown did a fine job. Saw very similar results when someone shot a deer with a G35 using factory Winchester JHP, deer dropped immediately and bullet stopped just shy of exiting on the other side. I wouldn't worry about wanting a lot more penetration unless you're after larger animals, whitetails aren't tanks.
I just pick up a box of the Sig V-Crown and hope to shoot it in gel next week. It sure looks like it did well on the deer.
I shot my deer this year ( 130 lb Doe) with a 180gr XTP loaded to 1200 fps. Broadside shot at 47 yards. Put it right behind her shoulder and had complete penetration and a nice size exit wound. She went about 15 yards and piled up. I could not be happeir with the performance of that load. The gun is a Rock Island FS double stack.

Congrats on the harvest. That's excellent shooting from nearly 50yards away!
Absolutely a great harvest, I have the RIA FS / HC as well, a great Pistol for the price : )
Took down two deer with Buffalo Bore 180 Grain hollow point this season. Shot placement on the first was abysmal on the first when I jerked the trigger and required a second shot, however the bullet went through several bones without issue. Second deer was right through the boiler room and left a blood trail you couldn't miss to its final resting place 30 yards away. Both shots where approximately 20 yards.
Yep, gota love those 20 yard shots 😀
Underwood 200 XTP for hunting !
I am a fan of WFN Hard cast GC bullets. I did some testing today using wet news print. I was shooting from 50 yards with my model 40 with a KKM 7? barrel and my MechTech carbine. The bullets are loaded over AA7. I haven?t chronograph this load yet but can tell you it?s not a super hot load by any means. This bullet is from an Accurate mould and sized to .403. I had 24? of news print and water jug behind the water soaked news print.
Both bullets did some serious disruption of the wet news print and punctured the water jug and we?re captured.
Now I have taken a couple deer with this load and all broadside shots never recovered a bullet the boiler Pom on those deer were mush all did a short death dash and fell over. None of the cases were a direct hit in the heart top of the heart in two cases yes but double lung shots. Devastating and the forest floor was painted red. I tested allot of jacketed bullets I would use for SD but not deer or elk. They look impressive in gel or news print. But not nearly as good as a WFN hard cast
I really love the Underwood 150gr Extreme Hunter loading. In my pistol they are laser accurate and devastating terminal performance. The only downside to the is that they are on the pricey side of things.

Thanks, I found a couple of boxes of Underwoods 200gr XTP in the safe last night that should work well for our deer opener on Saturday. I do have a few boxes of different weight Lehigh that could work as well
I think one of these should foot the bill for Saturdays opener, but will bring a slug gun if distance becomes an issue 😀

XTP has a good reputation but I will take the same grain weight WFN hardcast over it. I have not done gel testing, however in water soaked news print the hard cast always performed better. That said they have to shoot well from your gun and place, ent trumps every thing. But the more I shoot the more I test the more I lean to the hardcast for hunting. For SD not so ,icy because of overpenetration but hunting game thy WFN does some serious damage. A great book is one called Cast Bullet Performance by Veral he does an outstanding job explaining why.
Thanks, the books currently unavailable on Amazon, but would like to read it

Underwood with 200gr XTP or jacketed Bonded Bullet.
No need for Hardcast bullets for deer.
I use 155gr XTPs loaded HOT! They are quite devastating on meat.
