Title: Steel shoot w/10mm AR
Post by: Graybeard on September 17 2018 09:45:26 AM MDT
Went to one of the gun clubs where I regularly shoot steel and steel pin shoots. Took my 10mm AR for the first time. I probably didn't win the pistol caliber carbine class, but I'm pretty sure I had the most fun :D Man does that thing ring steel!! A few people wandered over from the second range to see what was hitting the steel that hard. One of the ROs tried it between rounds and put 7 or 8 rnds rapid fire into a steel milk can target and knocked the base out of the ground :) Best line of the day was from an RO on the second range that came over to check it out. He said, " When I first heard you had an AR in 10mm I thought why would anyone do that? Then the more I thought about it, I thought, why not!" Man after my own heart. I'm still smiling.

A 10mm AR is on my bucket list. I bet shooting steel would be the most fun a feller could have with his clothes all on.  8)

It was a BLAST, literally! Can't wait until next month to do it again.

Well so much for doing it again.... No more 10mm AR allowed at the steel shoots. Too hard on the steel according to the steel shoot committee :(

Not that surprising.  Does say something about the 10mm...

Yup, and it was a reason to get a JR Carbine 9mm that uses M&P mags. Now if that will stop jamming, I'll be all set.

I had a problem with the steel targets at the GSSF shoot in Wellington, Ks this year. On the flying M stage the single hard set steel target kept falling with the single shot per stage and had to be reset each time. And in the falling plate event I had several plates fall over so hard they bounced back up! I still managed to win second place in the Heavy Metal event.

What gun and load were you using?

Indeed, what is the setup?  I have had interest in such a beast but my research has led me to believe the blowback options are not the way to go, and only the sub-pistol gas length designs are worth pursuing....

http://www.rmwxtreme.com This is what I have. I can't speak to the pistol length guns as I have a carbine. Some polishing and tinkering was necessary  to get mine to run. Converted grease gun mags are problematic. Mine will only function with 25 rounds, so far. I run mostly 180gr bullets loaded fairly hot. Factory ammo loaded to 10mm lite specs may not cycle the action.

Another member here, Pablo, has one. He kindly shared some tips with me on getting it to run. A bench grinder with a buffing wheel and a dremel tool with polishing wheels is a must. I used the black polishing compound with very good results.

Pablo posted a lengthy thread about his 10mm AR build here. It's worth the read. Very good info there. He also responded to my PMs and was very helpful. I would be happy to do the same.

I had some issues with my 10mm barrel and sent it to Rudy at Macon armory and he cut a cone in the feed ramp which improved my feeding 98+%

Thanks for the tip.

I think my issues are mag related. Over 25 rounds in a mag and mine launches the round nose up into the barrel extension. Looks to me like the feed lips hang on a little too long and the base of the round doesn't jump up in line with the bolt. 25 or less of anything, wide meplat FMJs, Zero and XTP HPs, will run perfectly.

I also suspect that the follower angle is less than optimal for ARs. A little steeper angle might just bump up the base of the round as it comes off the feed lips.

It's too bad there isn't a AR lower with a MP5 magwell, or conversion block. 10mm MP5 mags are still available on the HK website.

Per Pablo's advice, polishing the rails on the BCG, the lugs on the bolt, and installing a one piece gas ring made a huge difference in mine.
