Title: Shoulder Holsters
Post by: EdMc on February 19 2013 01:03:51 PM MST
I was thinking of getting a shoulder holster for use while riding motorcycles. I tried the setup BH sells for their Serpa holster but it didn't fit very well.

Anyone know the differences between Galco's Jackass, Miami Classic and Miami Classic II? Other than the price.......I'd like it to fit a std and Commander size 1911. Thanks.

That is concealed...If you wear a parka.... :P

Many years ago I had an uncle mikes vertical rig.  It was comfortable, concealable and was the preferred way at the time to carry my Delta Elite.  When I sold the Delta Elite that holster disappeared, and I am not sure where it is.

It was NOT stylish in any way.

Did you watch the video?  Its very concealable, just slide it back under your arm... OR sling it across your body and wear a vest...

Its a very nice system. I got some extra ka-ching from the blizzard we had last week. I am ordering mine later this week! ;)

The Galco "Original Jackass Shoulder" daily. The OJ points the barrel upwards at a slight angle whereas the Miami Classic points horizontal. Also depends on how you adjust your setup. Shoulder holsters are not in "favor" at this time but they do offer the advantage of carrying my G20 or RIA in  comfort. Don't buy cheap holsters; they just don't work well for daily carry for most people.

Thanks denclaste, for explaining the difference. Wanted to make sure before I spent that much on a holster. Normally I just drop something in my pocket.

This.  Cheap hosters never work well.

That said, the price of a good, non-cheap holster varies a bunch depending on style and material.  Shoulder hosters from leather are about as expensive as you get for a good rig.

EdMC,
The jackass style holster is going to take a little bit of familiarization in drawing from. Due to the "cant" of the gun you have draw with your wrist at a angle. The Miami classic style you draw from with your wrist at a "straight" horizontal location. For some reason I like the barrel up/butt down orientation of the jackass style. The jackass , for me, is easier to conceal with (1911 gov or G20). I don't get butt printing like I do with the Miami classic style. I do have mine set-up as far up under the arm as is comfortable and I don't use tie downs. Good luck with you search.

I was thinking the same with a 5 in Colt Delta hanging horizontal. I have a normal build at 6'1" 185 lb....'skinny' in today's world. ;D I'm not sure the shorter Commander would make much difference. Something I'll have to decide. Thanks again, Dennis.

Back when I carried a Delta many years ago, I carried it in a a vertical rig.  It disappeared nicely.  I have always wondered how it would do in a horizontal.

I'm thinking it wouldn't disappear very well on me. ;D I'll have to take a longer look at the jackass rig as I don't have Don Johnson's wardrobe budget. 8)

EdMC,
I'm 5'11" 190#. In the Miami Classic I had the bottom corner of my 1911 "catch" on my shirts(cover garments); that doesn't happen with the Jackass due to the downward angle of the butt. I do know that the light wicking T shirts don't conceal well so I stick to the old style heavier T's or the "fishing shirts/travel shirts" in summer. It took me a week or so of constant wearing daily and playing with the adjustments to get max comfort and concealability.

Id say verticle rig warm weather, horizonal rig cold weather.Love the Jackass for G20.It's horizonal, garments conceal well,no rubbing etc.Triple K makes rigs or Witness models.

Thanks gentlemen, I think the Jackass rig will best suit my needs.

I'd like to see some more discussion of the Vertical hanging shoulder holsters as
it seems to me that if the guns handle is shorter than the barrel then you would be
able to conceal it easier.  Also maybe less risk of it falling out but at the expense
of being harder to do a quick draw from.  On the other hand I have seen some
vertical rigs ( only in internet of catalogs ) of vertical rigs that use spring steel
squeeze clamps and you can rip your gun out instead of lifting upward to pull
the gun out.   Any direct experience of seeing the rig in person ?

The only shoulder rig I have used was for the S&W Mod 19 6" 357Mag, it was vertical and spring clip was inside and a small elastic lower on the open front to allow a fairly quick forward and out deployment.

Many of my others are over the waist band belt loop but my conceal carry is the JS in the waist band klydex.
Very simple and functional.(http://armory.jsholsters.com/images/js.iwb.jpg)

I think I've become addicted to shoulder holsters. Just ordered a Alessi for my 1911 10mm. I've got 3 custom IWB holsters and none of them are as comfortable as the shoulder holsters for everyday carry. They are not ideal for everyone but I do like them.

They come in handy when wearing heavy garments. And practice with said garments on.
