I think this sums up my first thoughts on his choice of "175 grain Hornady Critical Duty FlexLock" loads,

If he had anything less than that 10mm he'd probably be dead. 10mm is the MINIMUM I would carry in bear country. His choice of bullet wasn't the best but it got the job done. I know guys that carry .380 and 9mm in Washington state, hiking in the backcountry. Not very smart.
