The PBR bullet I don't know where they get them from, I've looked over mast makes but do see it in the common line ups.  They may produce their own bullets.

HMS if it is loaded with LongShot it would be under 1200 fps and if it is loaded with TiteGroup would be around 1200 @ 9.0 grains according to my data.

What are you seeing from the HSM loads?  ???

Thanks for all this good information. I have the BB 340gr +P+ ammo but have never pulled a round to see what's inside.
Title: Re: 44 Magnum Factory/Commercial Ammo pulldowns
Post by: The_Shadow on February 01 2013 02:10:42 PM MST
harrygunner, it is my speculation that this load is Lil'Gun powder, based on the profile of the amount of powder, data with it and velocity claims.  However, I have never worked with this powder and only have two pictures to compare it with.
Buffalo does have a specific WARNING for that cartridge ONLY be shot in the listed guns, NOT to be shot in any others.
I can't shoot them form my revolver.  But thanks to Intercooler for sending these to rounds to me to show what is being used and dispell the myths... ???

I hope someone who has some Lil'Gun powder, could post a picture of this powder or e-mail the picture as a file to me.

Added the following load data for the BB 340 load...comparison of Hodgdons data...

Are 110 and 296 the same or you can't decipher?
Title: Re: 44 Magnum Factory/Commercial Ammo pulldowns
Post by: sqlbullet on March 11 2013 10:55:40 AM MDT
They are the same...Just different labels, at least right now.

But, and we say it all the time, always use current load data.  In 1970 H110, Win 296 and AA#9 were all the same powder.  Today that is not the case, with AA#9 having a faster burn rate.  It appears that what has actually happened is H110 and Win 296 got slower when AA#9 stayed the same, but who knows.

Gotcha. The .44's from them aren't very strong either.
Title: Re: 44 Magnum Factory/Commercial Ammo pulldowns
Post by: The_Shadow on March 11 2013 01:05:17 PM MDT
I was looking in my Hodgdon's book and they show more powder than what DT is using for the 240 grain JHP...this was a bit of a surprise for a company that is selling ammo on the premise of being higher performance stuff.

This is why I like doing the studies and I roll my own...compare notes, load and test to see how and what works, is accurate, clean burning performance from my guns.  Then if needed, I can make adjustments or refine things.

   What's the true performance standard for .44 Magnum in 180, 240 and 300gr? You know I have tested many and can only judge by my hand and F1 Chrony instruments  ;D

The 44 magnums as you have see with the Buffalo Bore 340 grain they load they specificaly said fire them ONLY in certain guns and NOT to be fired in others guns...yes some of the guns are built stronger and better materials.  But they don't list whether the loads are over pressure or not!

The hottest max loadings listed in the Hodgdon's 2012 annual shown as;
180 grain Hornady XTP with H-110 or 296, 31.5 grains @ 1896 fps 29,900 CUP(low pressure compared to other rounds with less velocity)
Lil'Gun 31.5 grains @ 1859 fps 32.300 CUP

240 grain Nosler JHP
H-110 24.0 grains @ 1522 fps 36,200 CUP
W-296 24.0 grains @ 1522 fps 36,200 CUP
Lil'Gun 24.5 grains @ 1582 fps 38,100 CUP

300 grain Hornady XTP
H-110 19.0 grains @ 1325 fps 38,800 CUP
W-296 19.0 grains @ 1325 fps 38,800 CUP
Lil'Gun 17.7 grains @ 1280 fps 37.600 CUP

The Lyman Devastator 260 grain Cast with gas check that I sent you were loaded with 16.2 grains Blue Dot @ 1455 fps should be about 37,000 CUP

So far the PBR .44 are smoking. I was possibly going to get a box of these just to see what they are made of but... crazy expensive and with the information I have now not much greater than Buffalo Bore:

 Today was .44 day and I finally... finally decided to do those Buffalo Bore 340's with everything else. I warmed up and did a bunch, so I knew I would be ready! All from my 7.5" Redhawk:

Remington 180gr JSP Average = 1689 FPS/ 1130 LBS
American Eagle 240gr JSP 1445, 1413, 1416, 1431. Average = 1426.25 FPS/ 1084 LBS
Underwood Ammo 300gr XTP 1174, 1144, 1167, 1177. Average = 1165.5 FPS/ 905 LBS
Underwood Ammo 180gr XTP 1583, 1608, 1620, 1575. Average = 1596.5 FPS/ 1019 LBS
Devastator 260gr Cast 1387, 1313, 1334, 1352, 1349. Average = 1347 FPS/ 1048 LBS
Buffalo Bore 340gr HardCast 1416, 1404. Average = 1410 FPS/ 1501 LBS!!!! Two perfect readings on the only two I had and showed me why they are best shot in certain firearms  :o :o

They 340's actually shot great but did have some push-back burping those big slugs through the barrel. I can see how a big diet of those could probably expand a frame. I like them!

REDLINE, I'm with you on that one!  It is possible they are having their powder blended for them.  The powder is light grey color which seems to suggest a lack of graphite and or other deterrents or coatings.  The yellow dust seems to be an identifier of some sorts for Pierce Ammo.  Mystery what they are using but the load data is interesting.  I was thinking RamShot products however they seem to be darker almost black or dark grey...

The powder in the 44's are similar to H-110 / W296 without the darker coatings and the powder in the 10mm was similar to AA#7 without coatings.

I want to say you're right.

When looking at the charge weight there are only so many powders to choose from and it's a pretty short list, especially when most I'm aware of can be weeded out immediately by look alone.

It's not:
No.9, Enforcer, 2400, H110, W296, 300MP, IMR 4227, Lil'Gun or N110.

I don't know what Norma 123 or 200 look like or what the charge weights would have to be, but highly doubt it would be either one anyway.  I also don't believe it could be Accurate 4100 or Alliant 410.

The only possibilities I hold in question are IMR SR-4759 and H4227 (discontinued?), and that's because I know nothing about them, like what they look like or what the charge weights would be.  All in all though I'm leaning toward exclusive blend.

The charge weight may have been set for 20.0 grains, but I listed the actual weights found.

Actual case length measure 245 FMJ, Length 1.2710" if the crimping was not adjusted for shorter cases, this would explain less crimp.
The recommended trim length 1.2750"
Difference is 0.0040"

Here are other case for comparison
Other Underwood Star Line; 1.2730" & 1.2755" (these are longer than the one's that the 245 FMJ where the bullet moved out under recoil)
Ted Nuget case was 1.2775"
Black Max WW-Super case was long 1.2840" "still within maximum length"

Let me know if you still need info.

Another powder I thought of is AA4100

  I gave my results to Kevin after the last test. These were supposedly changed to the Buffalo Bore loading to hit the 1425 FPS advertised number. Given 20.6 vs 22.2 you found in BB... not enough to get there!

What numbers did you get?  BTW the reason the bullet shows dark is because the rounds were tumbled to clean them after they were loaded...

Close to 1400 FPS. What would be the purpose of cleaning them post loading?

Did anyone happen to get actual velocities on the above 3 quoted loads with their personal revolver?  If so I'ld be very interested in knowing the details.

Intercooler;  I saw your reply #46 in this thread where you stated;  "I have Ted Nugent 270's on the way to test and pull down."  Did you get chronograph results on those with your Redhawk?

Wish we had positive powder IDs on those loads.  Wish there was a simply way for us to positively ID primers too.  Oh well, can't have everything.

Thanks Intercooler!  A few observations;

The Wolf load turned out to be a disgrace.  I couldn't believe the advertised velocity numbers to begin with and your testing showed my suspicion was correct.  Maybe they did their velocity testing from a rifle barrel length.

What really got me potentially interested in the Ted Nugent load was TheShadow posting an advertised velocity of 1542fps but I see in the spreadsheet you showed advertised velocity of 1456fps.  Still impressive if it were true, but of course it wasn't. :(  Doesn't matter much anymore though since that load isn't available anymore according to the Ted Nugent Ammo website.  In 44MAG they now only offer a 180gr load.

Seems the Underwood load isn't available anymore either.  It was impressive compared to most factory loads I see.  Would be nice to know the powder they were doing it with, and at what pressure level.  This was another load that you and TheShadow claimed different advertised velocities on by 50fps, but not a big deal.  A Nosler bullet load seems to have replaced it.  Underwood claims;
Technical Information
•Caliber: 44 Magnum
•Bullet Weight: 240 Grains
•Bullet Style: Nosler Jacketed Hollow Point
•Case Type: Ducta-Bright 7a Nickel Plated Brass

Ballistics Information:
•Muzzle Velocity: 1500 fps
•Muzzle Energy: 1199 ft. lbs.

I'ld be curious to see the results of this new Underwood Nosler bullet load in ballistic gel and if Underwood is loading it with equal specs and components to the old XTP load.

Thanks again for all the awesome data to all who have provided it!

There are plenty recipes for the 44 Mag and many using the H-110/W 296 across the bullet various weights.  It has been the most widely used powder in the 44 Magnums.  When you study the data the test gun and barrel length need to be considered with the posted velocities.  For example Hodgdon list their 44Mag data tested from a 8.275" with a 1:20" twist.  Their 357 Magnum is shown using a 10" with a 1:18.75" twist.  They don't mention if they are fixed barrels in a universal receiver, which they probably are at Hodgdon.  Speer Manuals will show their data fired from a production gun and barrel...

So when we shoot the ammo over a chrony we may not see the same velocity.

Recently ran some Buffalo Bore and Underwood 305gr ammo over my then new Labradar.  Guns/bbl lengths - 2 3/4" S&W M69, 4 1/4" S&W M69 and 7 1/2" Ruger SRH.  Thought the results might be of interest:

Buffalo Bore, 305 LBT LFN HC rated 1,325 fps
Underwood, 305 LFNGC Plated (HiTech?) rated 1,325 fps
LabRadar muzzle velocity at 33 deg F Buffalo

S&W M69 2.75" ===> BB 1,195 fps ===> Under 1,147fps
S&W M69 4.25" ===> BB 1,276 fps ===> Under 1,248 fps
Ruger SRH 7.5" ===> BB 1,395 fps ===> Under 1,315 fps
