Made a trip to our local indoor range this morning. As I was getting setup the guy in the next lane uncases an AR10. For me, it wasn't so bad, as I use duel ear protection, squishy ear inserts as well as headphones. I proceeded to load up several mags for the G20, 10.4gr BD under 180 XTP's. When I finished my first mag, he looked at me and said, REALLY!, I grinned and said really. I got the feeling his ear protection wasn't quite as robust, Lol, gota love it : )
My 10MM pin loads are loaded with bluedot, I get the same look!LOL
So much fun, I love it : )
You could have told him that you were shooting light loads. My favorite load with XTP's is 11.2gr Blue Dot. They chonograph at 1245fps from my G29.
Absolutely getting into the nuclear realm, or at least as far as I'm concerned
I used to use a load of 10.4gr BD in target loads at IDPA shoots at a local range in Wichita. My fellow shooters enjoyed the way my loads lit up the range and on the super close shots even scorched the cardboard targets! :o
Since then I have begun using Ramshot Silhouette powder and it works great for target shooting loads and full power loads. Much cleaner and no blinding flash.
Absolutely, BD is way flashy
I used to get the same reaction when I fired my 454 Casull at an indoor range. One time it actually knocked the dust off the light fixtures LOL. You should have seen them when I fired up the 500S&W magnum! Believe it or not I get the biggest surprised reactions to my 22mag. pistol. It shoots out flames about a foot long.
Funny Stuff!
I too almost always wear double ear protection when indoors or shooting under cover at my gun club. Our outside ranges use an aluminum canopy structure cover which reverberates gun shot reports super loud ! I once accidentally sent a braked 300 win mag round down range with no hearing protection :o that was PAIN and ringing for 4 days.
Formerly a member of an indoor range that allowed magnum rounds to be fired there. I could have the place to myself after about 10 mins with a .357 Desert Eagle I used to have. Heh, one time I got moved to the LEO only side of the range because in the words of the range officer, "That thing is scaring the old people", and no departments were training that day.
Good humor 😂

I have the 460 S&W mag 12", and I too shot it once indoors. Insanely loud and massive fireball. After sending the first 5 shots the range was complete quiet and I had an observing crowd behind me applauding. Funny stuff. I have my 460 set up for longer distance 100-200 yd target and my 460 is just too much indoors and not really fun. Here's a pic of the beast:

Yep, that's a beast for sure 😀
Many years ago, I was shooting my DE at the local indoor range. Minding my own business, an incredible boom went off in the booth next to me and a piece of plate from the adjacent trap swung down. It almost fell off. I felt the concussion from the muzzle blast in my chest. The guy next to me was shooting a 45-70 revolver :o Needless to say the owner of the range was not pleased.....

My son was a shooting instructor and armorer in the Air Force for years. He had learned prior to enlistment to use both the squishy plugs and a muff type protector at all times. When he was discharged along with several other instructors, their hearing was tested to determine the amount of damage that had been done. These guys shoot a LOT! My son had no damage, according to him, of course; every other instructor had some if not a lot. In my view double protection should always be worn.
