Title: Winchester ranger t 45 +p 230gr vs Federal HST 45 ACP 230gr +P
Post by: Kenk on August 23 2018 11:34:39 AM MDT
I have been searching for comparisons between Winchester's ranger t 45 +p  230gr and Federal's HST 45 ACP 230gr +P, but have found very little, Thoughts?

We carried both over the years.  During a gel shoot I had the rep for one of those manufacturers tell me that as far as he could see both perform equally. I like the nose shape of the Ranget T better for feeding and think it penetrates barriers better.  The HST is often priced substantially less, enough to offset any imagined benefit of the Ranger T

I'd happily carry either round or the Speer Gold Dot 230gr.

Thanks Rick, considering I have a bunch of the HST ammo, and none of the Win Ranger T, I guess I'm good, Lol. I get a kick out of the marketing on my 50rd boxes, Law Enforcement Only, yet the salesmen would sell me as much as I wanted. Funny Stuff
Thanks

Ken

Best side by side comparison can be found at Lucky Gunner Labs.....  Which I know you look at.

Both are outstanding!  Two best Home SD performers in the entire caliber IMHO.  The pistol in the quick access safe in the night stand drawer beside my bed is a 45acp...  Magazine in the pistol stoked with 230gr Winchester Ranger T; spare magazine beside said pistol stoked with 230gr Federal HST.
I favor the FN FNX-45 (15+1) for a bit over 1/2lbs of jhp lead in every magazine :o.

Other choices of quick access firepower are secure in other areas (including the best millimeter...10mm).

Ken, situation is DIRE to say the least if full mag of either choice  isn't adequate for problem!

Availability comes and goes but you can find it if you poke and hunt around for it online.  When you find it, pick up a decent amount.   Think Lucky Gunner has some 45 acp Ranger T available now but its stupid priced...  Like a $1.00 per round :o.  Nutz!  I've picked it up several places online but a couple of decent starting points....
Arms Unlimited has a decent price by the case.
eagleeyeguns.com and mahsupplies.net have it sometimes.

Federal 45acp HST is a cheaper and much more readily available.  Winchester Ranger T is going to be a bit more and any advantage one over the other is very debatable.  No question about it, I have more HST.  However, if you're like me and want what you want its not a bad idea to have a little variety on hand. :))

It's quite possible I want the Ranger T's, not because they are really any better than the HST's, but because I don't have any of them, Lol, funny creatures we are
