Title: Lee 10mm dies and .40SW
Post by: Pablo on August 11 2018 09:46:48 PM MDT
I don't reload .40SW, but my BIL is indeed, Mr. .40SW.

I want to plink some .40 from my Glock 20L w/.40SW barrel and share some ammo with him......I swear I read somewhere Lee 10mm dies have some kind of issue with .40SW or I need to buy one more die or something..........Obviously I need to pay attention!

Help!  ;D

Lee makes or has made dies that are 10mm specific.  They also make dies that do both.  If it is a set of 10mm only does you may have issues.  10/40 does are no worry

The only difference is the 1/8" shorter casing of the 40S&W for the case mouth expansion and crimp adjustments.  If the expander will go deep enough to start to flare the case mouth of the shorter 40S&W case and seating taper crimp die will screw down enough to apply the crimp to the very edge of the 40S&W casing you will be good to go.

I will say that my 10mm only RCBS die had enough expander travel to do the 40S&W without issue but the seater / taper crimp die didn't fully apply the crimp because it contacted the shell holder.  However it did close in enough for the cases to feed reliably even in the Bar-Sto 40S&W conversion for my S&W1006.  I have since purchased a 40S&W Seater / Taper crimp die to provide a perfect taper crimp.

As I recall the one time I tried to run some 40 on my Lee 10mm dies, I couldn't get sufficient case mouth bell, perhaps none at all.

I dug the original box out. Per the paper instructions in the box - These Lee dies are ".40SW and 10mm"   ;D

My preference for any pistol dies is the Lee Carbide 4 die set. When I first got the 10mm, it was a headache adjusting back and forth between the 10mm and the 40SW. So I have 2 sets, one dedicated to each cartridge. I have zero issues with either set. I'm not sure why there would be a major concern. I get a full resizing of the brass, get all the bell on the cases needed, seats right, crimps right. The Lee Carbide dies work for me with no issues.

Nice, yes my pistol dies are all 4 Die (carbide) sets.
