Local GS is getting rid of their reloading stuff at 50% off. The only consumables they have left are Fed 155 Large Pistol Magnum primers. They're really cheap and I need to save wherever I can.
I have three reloading manuals (and those online) and they often don't list which primers they use with their recipes.
One reloader told me to stay 1/2 grain below max when using magnum primers.
One article said that magnum primers can be interchanged with standard primers and are often more consistent (so more accurate).
Some have told me that they use whichever they have on hand at the time with no change in recipe.
Thoughts?
I have a pistol (Sig P226 X5) that is particularly fond of Federal primers. I still can't find Fed spp and was forced to buy the magnum primers, because they were available.
I stuck at "book" minimum charge with magnum primers & had no trouble.

Most handloading book data is conservative enough to swap to magnum primers for pistols.
Many publications don't even show pressure values anymore. I have to commend the ones who do add the pressure values like Hodgdon and Western Powders...
The load shot daily in a G29 (Storm Lake barrel)--14.5gr #9/180 cast/Fed/CCI Lp Mag. Just received 10K Fed LP Mag match. No sign of pressure, bases measure .4280. Brass has been reloaded 13 times.

This. Magnum primers may also be a little tougher/harder to avoid flattening or primer blowout at magnum pressures. Seems to vary by brand. Some revolvers with lightly tuned actions may have a problem, but autos should be fine.
At 50% off, I'd snag them. Unless your current loads are running at the top end, mag primers will work just fine without redoing the workups.
