Title: Any of you carry a secondary weapon for backup purposes
Post by: Kenk on June 06 2018 06:00:57 PM MDT
Any of you carry a secondary weapon for backup purposes? I carried a 380 smith Body Guard for a while, but became discouraged / sold it after reliably issues continued to happen
Thanks

Ken

I usually carry a sig P245 in an ankle holster (or a p290 if I am wearing dress trousers.)

Yeah.  Stainless Mini-14 with two twenty rounders in the back of the truck.

If I know I'm going to be in the city (the two or three that I visit unwillingly) I'll carry my VP9 OWB strong side and my XDs 9mm IWB in the middle of my back.   I trust my H&K 110% but poopoo occurs, guns get dropped or damaged and I can carry under LEOSA to places my wife can't with her CCW.   If we get caught in an active situation she can be my tailgunner.

Have been researching the Sig P365, sounds like there were some possible reliability issues at first. Not sure if this has been resolved or not

I have been hearing nothing but good about the P365 recently, I may replace my P290 with it.

Seems like there were some problems when it first came out, unless I'm thinking about something else. It's a sharp looking subcompact, at a reasonable price

No, you are correct, there were some issues with it going into battery, spring breakage and others when it first came out.  From what I understand the issues have been fixed in the "gen 2" version (to the frustration of those that bought it right out of the gate.)

I carry a DB9 subcompact, in addition to a larger gun sometimes. Depends on where I'm going and what I'm wearing. In extremely cold weather with a long parka on it's tough to get a full size auto out quickly. I can keep that one in an hand warmer pocket.

Wouldn't highly recommend that particular gun. Mine made a trip back for service and now runs very reliably (pre Taurus days.) The problem is it is downright unpleasant to shoot.

I, too, have taken an interest in the P365. A little wider backstrap would definitely go a long way. Extra capacity wouldn't hurt either. FWIW, I'vs shot a couple of Beretta Nanos and they were surprisingly easy to handle. Even with a high bore axis the muzzle flip was minimal.

If I do carry a backup piece it would be the Ruger LCP 380...

I bought a S&W Shield 9mm and a 45 ACP about a year ago to fill this role.  To date I have not yet actually carried.  Plan was an ankle or boot holster.

I used to have a 9mm Shield but traded it. It was very reliable, but for some reason I just didn't care for it

A back up gun to me is a j frame or glock 42 or mini 22mag. I dont feel like my backup weapon needs 10plus rounds

I feel you man.  I hate those guns.  They are small, reliable, solid guns, but I just hate them.

That's the way I feel about the Shield.45 :)) Fits well in my hand, runs great, and I really don't like shooting them. 3 relatives have them and love em.

As long as they are as reliable as my G20 and G30, I would be ok with 6 or 7 rd's too

my LCP is 100% reliable with any ammo I tried in it. I keep it loaded with my 95 gr. XTP reloads. its my deep concealment pistol and if I ever thought I needed a back up to a larger pistol, I wouldn't hesitate to grab it. hell, sometimes it is my primary weapon! so why not? ::) I carry  it everywhere  it shoots pretty good and is fairly accurate.

Yeah!  Now this is what I call a 21st Century New York Reload.

Remember the NY reload?  Eastern police forces were limited to the 6 round .38 revolver.   Some of the more serious coppers carried two or even three revolvers;  if they got into a firefight, they'd just drop the empty one and grab the spare.

But this is even cooler.   NY reload with modern semis?

Maybe we ought to call that the L.A. Riot reload.   (Except you can't carry in L.A.)

Rick R can under LEOSA and more power to him!

When I was a LEO I carried a primary and two backups...  The backups were a .22 Magnum High Standard Derringer clipped to a strap on the body armor and a S&W 42 in an Eagle leg holster.

After leaving LE I did 5 years of PI work and carried a pair of S&W 6906s and a KelTec P32 clipped to my underwear right under the pants zipper....the theory being if taken hostage one can always ask to go to the bathroom....

Never used to carry a BUG while off duty but over the last several years have. Still have a KelTec P32 and also a Kahr P380. Both have been very reliable and for me easier to hide than a snubbie...

A friend who I did LE work with in Texas carried three guns...a S&W 25-2 6.5" .45 ACP revolver in a holster, a Colt .45 ACP Commander in his left front pocket (we had big pockets) and a Colt Officers ACP in a Eagle leg holster...and four extra magazines. His theory was if one needs a backup gun you are going to need a gun very badly and would never carry anything as a backup that he would not carry as a primary by itself....can't fault the logic... When the department went away from revolvers and SA semi-autos he carried a Glock 17 in the holster and Glock 19 in his pocket...and two extra magazines...

Dear Sig P365:
I like you but I just can't trust you.
Sorry
