New here, but been reading threads for a while. I do not get why everyone is afraid to shoot their 1006's. I bought one today off GB and am going to shoot the crap out of it when it gets here! Too good of a gun not to shoot. That's my .02. Carry on.
Several years back I worked with a guy that restored and raced vintage mustangs in scca races. 69-70 were his favorite years and he loved the Boss variants.
He told me the sweetest thing was racing guys in vintage Ferraris and Porsches. He said he never lost to them. Not because his car was faster or because he was a better driver but because he could afford to not back down in a corner. If he tangled sheet metal he knew he could find a replacement fender or panel in the nearest junk yard. Those Ferrari guys were gonna pay a ton for a hand hammered part.
I don't think anyone here is afraid thekr 10xx S&W is under built, even for today's ammo. But the reality is that mistakes happen, double charges can be a thing and no one is making new parts for those guns.
You want to shoot yours, go nuts. No one here will say you shouldn't. But I do get not wanting to risk a gun that is your one and only part of core 10 mm history. There are plenty of other fine shooting brands and models.
Welcome to the forum and don't forget some range reports!
HoytFlinger, Welcome to the forum! Congrats on getting your 1006 also. I started my 10mm love with the S&W 1006 with adj. sights early 1990 and I still run rounds through mine. I also have a few spare parts because I have several of the 10xx series pistols to maintain.
They are built like tanks and should hold up well with good maintenance and care. It is a damn shame that S&W quit producing parts for these great pistols, but there are plenty out there and we should be able to locate some items from time to time.
One thing that makes mine unique is that I have two Bar-Sto Match Grade conversion barrels one for 40S&W and the other is 9x25Dillon.
I still test ammo from these for velocity testing against my other pistols... I have placed the biggest part of the 10mm ammo digestion on my Glock pistols just because... ::)

An excellent analogy!
I shoot my 1006. I don't understand the question.

There are a bunch of threads on here and other forums where people have said they won't shoot their's since Smith stopped supporting them.

This isn't my first 10mm. Had Glock 20's in the past. I'll post some when it gets here. It is shipping tomorrow.

I get it. But since you used the word "everyone", I was being tongue in cheek. ;D
Point is, I'm with you!
I have a couple of guns that don't get shot much. None are 10mm's.
One is an old Remington Model 12 pump action 22. The gun belonged to my great grandfather, who gave it to my grandfather as a wedding present. Grandpa and Grandma would shoot it for Friday evening entertainment when they were newly weds since they couldn't afford to go out. They shot a 3' hole in a chicken wire fence where they hung cans as targets. My mom remembers the hole in the fence, but didn't know it's origin until Grandpa told me the story.
The rifle has unique value to me because of it's family history. We do shoot it, but is is not a gun we put lots of rounds through.
Some people view their 10XX guns as a personal investment in the history of the 10mm, and don't want to risk not having it. Guns will wear out, and without factory support, parts that wear are just gonna be worn.
I've been accumulating spare parts. I have all the springs, spare guide rod, and spare firing pin. I look every day for spares.
I NEVER hesitate to shoot mine.
If a gun has some collectors or sentimental value I can see taking it easy. Otherwise what's the point of owing a pistol you're afraid to shoot.
This sucks. Gun was delivered this morning to my FFL and they won't have it ready until Monday. I have to find a different FFL to use in the future. This one is with budsgunshop.com retail store. They just get way too many transfers, hundreds per week, for the amount of staff they have. One guy to unpack and log all the transfers in.
That does suck.
I dealt with one guy locally that would only transfer one handgun every 14 days. Law is 5 days between or special reporting to ATF and local LEO.
I have found a pawn shop that is very reasonable near me, but I keep thinking about just getting my own FFL.
Bud's does hundreds of transfers a week. The problem is the one guy unpacking that doesn't work every Saturday. FedEx dropped off 250 rounds of Fiocchi ammo a couple of hours ago. Thought I was going to have a great day at the range. Oh well.
having a gun you don't shoot is like having a girl friend or wife that you don't have sex with. :D

Good weekend to start reloading
I don't own anything that I am hesitant to shoot. Variety is the spice of life.
I'll add as Jay Leno says "everything in my garage I can just get in and drive.", because you can't really appreciate a machine unless it's running and a pretty gun or car that just sits collecting dust just strikes me as wrong on some level.

One of the days I'll get back into it. I have 250 rounds for now and Fiocchi doesn't cost a whole lot. I got 250 for $100 plus shipping.

You have not been married very long have you? ::)
I will refer you to the documentary on married life.... Married with Children...
the girlfriend though....
Reloading.....were we talking about women or ammo? ;)
Well Bud's just sent me the email telling me it is ready, but they close in about 30 minutes. I am only about 10 miles as the crow flies, but with traffic, no way I would make it. I'll go at lunch tomorrow.
Assume you are either in Lexington or Sevierville?
Lexington
Yep, married, an important consideration : )

You afficionadas are going to hate me, but I am not a stainless fan so I believe I am going to cerakote it graphite black :o
If you can swing it, go for something more like Ion Bond/ferritic nitro carburizing. I have cerakoted and then carried stainless for long periods of time, and it does eventually wear. Which is fine...The gun has a nice "been there" patina that was earned. But if I had the money at the time I would have done the Ion Bond.
I would, but I hate to ship the gun off. I can have it cerakoted locally.

Can't wait to see the pics along with the range report.

I think the last time I sat and figured it out it was about 12 bucks for a box of fifty to make me 10mm reloads.

Lexington
Been to Buds a few times, my brother lives in Lexington. We usually go to Semper Fi for indoor shooting, closer to him.
I got a wild hair several weeks back and swapped my 1006 to a Smith M29PC. I still have a 1066 and M610 4 inch if I get the urge to shoot S&W 10mm. Hope to see pics of your refinished 1006.
I decided against getting it cerakoted. I wish it was tapped for a rail. I really need a red dot. I have to use readers to see the open sights and anything past 10 yards and the target gets super blurry. I hate to only be able to shoot this thing at 10 yards. :( If anyone near Lexington, KY has a Glock 40 MOS and wants a 1006 I am thinking about trading so I can have a red dot capable 10mm.
Going to sell it on Gunbroker I believe. I hate too, but wife would kill me if I bought another gun as I just bought a S&W Victory about two weeks ago.
I used to be buddy buddy with a gunsmith. I was over doing something over there (Think I was just out his way and wanted to blab) When he tells me he had a customer who had him mount a set of ghost rings on a Colt 1911. He really didn't have time to go to the range and see if it was on or off, could I do it for him? So I did. I was wondering if they would help me see better without my glasses on. (They didn't) Red Dot is much better for me.
Yep, I need to consider going that route myself
Got a G40 MOS last Sunday. Haven't gotten a red dot yet, but am going to shoot it open sights on Saturday. I like the way it feels. I have had about 7 or 8 Glocks and this one is already my favorite and haven't even shot it.
Yep, the G40 is high on my list as well. I'm sure I would like it as much, if not more than my G20 : )
I love my model 40 MOS with a Trjicon and a 7" KKM bbl. accurate and great velocity and very enjoyable to shoot.
Hey Ramjet, so the Trjicon is everything you had hoped for in that optic?
Thanks
Ken
Guess it wasn't meant to be. I returned the red dot as I couldn't hold it steady, was more accurate open sights, and put on Ameriglo CAP sights. They are awesome at 10 yds. I tried shooting at 25 yds and I couldn't see the target with my readers. I bought this G40 for hunting and there is zero chance of me qualifying with it at my club. Qualifying is 2 out of 3 bullets in a six inch circle at 50 yds. No sense in keeping a 10mm that I can only shoot a max of 10 yards with. Sucks beyond words. I guess pistol hunting is out for me. Another one to GunBroker.
