Title: So What Did You Do On The Reloading Bench Today?
Post by: gandog56 on June 03 2018 01:44:54 PM MDT
I went to a gun show, and while I did not get any new guns I picked up 1 pound jugs Of H414 And Varget. Got a bag of 250 180 grain .40 cal jacketed soft point projectiles. When I came in I had gotten 4 new magazines for my Ruger Mark IV ,22 LR pistol, so I loaded up the mags and put them in a pistol magazine pouch.

Absolutely nothing, and am kicking myself for it now. Instead, I took a gentleman's suggestion and sent 200 - 180gr XTP's down range from my RIA, what a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon

Got 500- 9mm brass ready along with 200- 10mm and 120- 30-30 for the Contender pistol. I always take the 30-30 with me when shooting at any public range in case I have an idiot next to me. Standing next to it when it goes off is like getting hit in the face with a sheet of plywood. Doesn't take many rounds and they move or leave. Gotta love H335 and 110gr carbine bullets for removing unwanted company. The fireball alone is impressive.

Loaded up 100 more 10mms to go with the 150 or so in my range bag and headed out. Planned to stop by LGS for a vertical foregrip for my 10mm AR and hit the range to see if my mag tweaks have paid off. The range was closed :'( 1 hour drive to next range due to freeway closure. Ended up at Costco instead. At least I have some nice steaks to grill up.

What are the spec's on your 10mm ar if I may inquire?  Sounds interesting, especially the muzzle velocity.

I bought a RWM Xtreme DI 10mm AR complete package, using grease gun mags and a hybrid lower. Mine has a 16" SS barrel. It did have some issues, but a member here, Pablo, steered me in the right direction. It was $799 w/one mag included. I ordered 3 extra mags. The cycling issues were sorted out with some polishing w/ a dremel and a one piece gas ring($10) Mags wouldn't feed when full, but I think I have that sorted out. Didn't get to test that on Sunday.

Ron Williams (RWM Xtrreme) met his promised timelines, was quick to answer emails, and offer suggestions. I took it upon myself to sort out this guns issues. I would offer the caveat that if you buy one be ready to tinker with it. Mostly just small refinements.

Haven't had it that long and only had one opportunity to run some factory and handloads over the Chronograph. I'm looking forward to doing that again with some different loads in the next few weeks. I'll post the results.

Here is the post of my results thus far http://10mm-firearms.com/reloading-10mm-ammo/chrony-results-for-10mm-ar-and-kimber-tle-ii/msg75017/#msg75017

It really is. Surprisingly quiet and very little to no muzzle flash. If I have the mag issue sorted out I plan on using it next Saturday. There's a steel pin shoot and it should do well in the pistol caliber carbine class.

I loaded some 10mm.

Bullet:  180 grain Hornady FMJ
Case:  Starline
Powder:  13.0 grains  Accurate Arms #9
Primer:   CCI large pistol

This load, per AA's published data, should travel about 1200+ fps.    It is not a max load but isn't a .40 S&W load either.    I didn't chrono it, but it feels like some SIG 180 grain factory stuff, which is published at 1250 fps.    Hot, consistent load.

Post by: sep on June 06 2018 07:56:20 AM MDT
I loaded some 180 grain WFNGC test loads using two different hardcast boolits (Cast Performance/Montana Bullet Works) and Win 296 for my 357 magnum and some mid range 240 grain WFNGC Montana Bullet Works test boolits for my 44 Magnum using Unique.

I'm gravitating towards the following in three pistol calibers for woods carry for bear defense and medium game hunting; 180 grain WFNGC at 1200 fps in 357 Magnum, 200 grain WFNPB at 1216 fps in 10mm and 240 grain WFNGC at 1200 fps for the 44 Magnum. 1200ish fps seems a sensible minimum velocity to push these three hardcast bullet weights in these three calibers.

I have to chronograph the 357 and 44 loads to verify their velocities but I have already chronographed and dialed in my pistols for the 10mm loads at 1216 fps using 10.0 grains of Blue Dot with the Montana Bullet Works WFNPB boolit.

Oh you want to know what I did at the reloading bench? I worked ON the reloading bench!! Ha Ha. When ever I have to move the bench to put in or take the room air conditioner I spread the legs out and need to put them back together with a ratchet strap. Will screw together as I can.  Craig

yesterday I cranked out 170 .40 S&W with 180 gr. HST bullets. today I put the .40 barrel in my Witness and shot up some of those and other various ammo including some factory Federal 180gr.  HST LEO duty ammo given to me by a Deputy. my loads  7.5 gr. of Longshot felt hotter. I didn't have a chrono but there was slightly more recoil & noise. ;D

Anyways I got them in today. They are drying now. While I was in the reloading shed I have been replacing all the worn cardboard boxes of reloads with new plastic ones. I finished up the ten mm. Refilled all my empty 10mm magazines and moon clips. Started to swapping out all my .357 magnum/.38 special reload boxes.

Finished up drying all the 10mm cases. Sized them all then ran them all through my Redding GRx base sizing die, separated by headstamp, ran them through the vibratory tumbler for a final polish with some Nu-Finish car wax, and bagged them up for future reloading.

Working up a load using 180gr Berry's RS, CCI 300, and Alliant BE-86.  10 rounds of each powder weight starting weight with 8.4gr working up 0,1 increments to 8.8gr.  Hope to make it out to the range this Friday with the G20 to test them.

Made 100 rounds of rather stiff 10mm loads for my Ruger Super Redhawk 10mm revolver. My test loads looked real good at the range. Had to pull a separated 10mm case out of my Mechtech CCU. Couldn't get anything to work until I took a .45 cal Boresnake, ran it up the chamber side to just where the bristles were making contact on both sides of the half of the case lodged in it, and when I pulled it back out of the chamber end the little circle of brass came with it. I probably have loaded that case about 10 times, so I am not too worried the Mechtech did it.

Don't know what the issue is, however none of these loads would hit the bullseye!  :-[>:D :-[ >:D

I shot some of my other rounds with the only difference is the powder is 6.7gr of Winchester WSF.  No issues with this load.

Primers are the best way to determine that, not a chrono. Are the primers flattened, or bulged, or excessively cratered?

I don't know a polite way to say this, and I mean no offense, but this is exactly backwards.

The Chronograph combined with posted load data is going to reveal pressure problems even when no other signs exists.  If you exceed published velocity using documented components you are over pressure no matter how nice your primers and brass look.

Primers are the least reliable pressure indicator since there is so much variability in cup hardness, even for the same brand/type between lots.

Agreed the same primers being used for 60K psi are the same ones being used for 37,500 psi for 10mm...
Yes primers can show stresses from several different situations, but trying to determine the causes is a process all to its own...Nonetheless they still need to be looked at for various signs.

Primers (loose fitting) can be pushed outward under pressure and in a semi auto pistol, that can actually cause an early opening or unlocking of the blowback operated firearm and as the casing slams the breech face reseat that primer.
Sometimes the primer will get blown out completely and push the casing off the extractor hook leaving the casing in the chamber.

Primers are a difficult read.
The below primers are from my 357 Sig P229 with pressure signs at/about max charge, but I think I have a slightly long chamber

On the other hand, these pictures are from factory ammo for my revolver  :o

Your chamber may not be long you may be over sizing the brass and pushing the necked area too deep...  Check to see if backing off of the sizing die will allow a better chamber fit.  You want to be 0.000" (flush) and not more than 0.002" below flush as sized...
This also helps the 9x25 Dillon as well...

Half of the old cardboard ammo boxes I had for all my 10mm reloads were deteriorating, warping, or tearing. Or all of the above at once. So I just got done replacing all the 50 round cardboard ones for 100 round plastic ones.

Sized, tumbled and inspected/primed just under 150 4x S&B 10mm cases.
These were 180gr 1250fps loads to start, and then reloaded/fired with a mix of 180XTP, 180 and 200gr MBC hard cast coated, and 200gr Doubletap WFNGC's-all warm but not nuclear (1250-1325 on the 180's and 1150-1225 on the 200's). Fired out of a 5" RIA FS.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the brass is holding up very well with only 6 relegated to a final firing pile due to easy priming, and I've only suffered a 8% loss rate out in the desert and forward of the line at the indoor range.

With SG Ammo's prices on their loaded S&B, I may by more rounds as a source of brass again!

Not nearly enough having ms really screws me on a lot of things.  Was only able to reload 100 45 colt loads for a upcoming pin shoot.  Still need to do a hundred 10mm for a plate shoot tomorrow. Decided on a load of 7.5gr of unique under extremes 165gr rnfp.
Ran a 100 of them last week and they felt really comfy and shot well.  I usually cast my own but it's been really hot and the heat has been kicking my little white butt this week

Just received a box of brass I traded for on ammobrasstrader. I got 134 7.7 Jap and 25 .303 Brit. They have all been decapped and run through a vibratory cleaner but I am going to run them all through my wet rotary tumbler with the stainless steel pin media to scour out the primer pockets. Then I will size them all, trim them all to length, chamfer the cases inside and out, final polish in corncob Flitz media additive and NuFinish Car Wax. Then separate by headstamp and bag them for reloading later.

Loaded some 115g 9mm FMJs over 6.1g Power Pistol. Perfect plinking load. I also loaded 25 rounds of 10mm 180g GDHP with Blue Dot and 25 rounds of 10mm 180g Hornady XTPs with Blue Dot.

I am struggling to find a place to shoot with my chronograph. One range lets me use it but it is so busy it kinda sucks dealing with the people. If anyone is near Kansas City and has a place I can shoot I will reciprocate in some way. I hope to buy land this fall to remedy the problem. Have a great Sunday evening gents.

Last night I reloaded 100 rounds of Zero jhp 180 Gr. with 12.2 Gr. Of Acc. No. 9 and Winchester LP primers. I also reloaded about 80 Speer Gold Dot TMJ's 180 Gr. With 10.Gr. Of Bluedot and Winchester LP primers. I've been having a little a difficulty getting a consistent bullet seating on my Dillion and these Speer Gold Dot's were really easy to work with. Today I cleaned some brass --
Reloaded 6.5 Creedmoor 108gr Lapua
Reloaded 223 69grSMK

And my favorite some Ken Waters remakes -- 44special in 44Mag cases. 240gr Remingtons that clock in at 1050fps across my chronograph.

That's what I've been doing lately.   I'm doing 240 grain hardcast SWC over 11 grains of AA5.   There's no light 44 mag load in AA's published data, so I extrapolated from 45 Long Colt data.   I need to chrono these loads to see just what they're doing, but I'm guessing around 1100 fps.    In the big 6.5 inch 629, they are very accurate and pleasant loads to shoot.

Yes my data shows your load will be about 1137fps at 23Kpsi

Isn't that the reason you shoot is to reload  ;D

I performed a confessional and loaded up some rifle rounds.

Every day I see more and more people starting to reload for many different reasons. Naively, most think it is going to save them money. I have been reloading for over two decades and I too thought the exact same thing. I have come to realize and say it a bit differently after 22 years, reloading allows me to practice more than if I were buying factory and the side effect is it calms the savage beast. I find reloading to be a very relaxing hobby. Many times throughout this journey I have actually found myself loading more than I was shooting. Scrounging brass on the range just to reload it, carefully measuring and weighing factory rounds before pulling them apart in awe of the magic I would often find. If you find yourself with these same symptoms you might be a reload-a-holic, Hi I am Mr.Revolverguy and I am a reload-a-holic.

As my therapy session for the week I have decided to share with the group some of my reloading procedures and tools that have made this an absolute joy for me over the years. From day one of adventuring into this hobby of reloading, rifle brass prep was always tedious and just down right boring to me. The right tools can make this as close to enjoyable as shooting as you can possibly get. I know what my dad meant now when he would say, "Son, with the right tools and a creative mind most anything is possible."

I do not show the reloading manuals in this video that I start every session with. I encourage anyone watching this video to never take a load from the Internet and just start loading, that is very dangerous. Remember you are not only capable of hurting yourself following that practice but also the people around you at the range. So always use safe reloading practices which starts with owning at a minimum two loading manuals. Fair warning though, you could end up like me with a bookshelf full of them and comparing loads of yesteryear to loads of today — did I mention I am Mr.Revolverguy and I am a reload-a-holic.

Are you a reload-a-holic?

My project:  Loaded 10mm Auto cartridges with 155 gr. pure zinc bullets from Mid-South Shooters Supply.  Data:

155 gr. pure zinc bullet RNFP
6.9 gr. Vihtavuori 3N37
WW LP primer
Starline brass
OAL 1.265
Muzzle velocity 1078
Previously fired in Ruger SR1911

These 155 gr. bullets inasmuch as they made of zinc are significantly longer than equivalent weight bullets in lead or jacketed lead.  Therefore, powder selection is important because a fluffy or bulky powder might result in a compressed load (which I never personally like).   This was a comfortable, smooth, mild load.  Obviously not for hunting but surely suitable for targets of another sort.  No residue of any kind left in the bbl. after firing.

I much prefer the 10mm Auto over .40 S&W.  Why?  Because the .40 is more limited in capability.  The 10, you can load it down and make it behave like a .40, or go right up the power ladder to some pretty stout loads.  The 10 is way more versatile.

The zinc bullets are part of my exploration of alternative projectile materials.  Non toxic shot is already required by the feds for hunting migratory birds.  Many states have their own restrictions on lead shot for other hunting purposes.  California already has a lead bullet ban in some areas, non-lead ammunition for all hunting will be required there beginning July 1, 2019.  A number of states recommend non-toxic bullets for hunting.  We can see what's coming.  So I'm checking out the alternatives, such as copper solids, frangible bullets, and even these zinc bullets.  Which were fairly inexpensive at $10 the hundred.

Couple hundred rounds of Montana Gold 180 JHP over 9.2 grains of Longshot. Then the phone rang and family "stuff" interrupted the rest of the weekend. :(

mr.revolverguy I am in the same boat as you. Im a reloadaholic. I started with the notion of saving money. Yes I am gaining more ammo for the same amount of money I would spend on factory. Still a savings in my mind. Also I started to save money on calibers I already had, 270, 243 and 357 Mag. That has evolved into, "I can load for it so why not?" This brings me to a total of 8 handgun and 9 rifle calibers that I load for. Been toying with the idea of adding 22TCM to the mix and loading for the bolt rifle I have.  I also find myself loading more than shooting. Working two jobs tends to cut into range time. I do get to the range, just not that often. Some of the calibers I have loaded, I know have more than I will probably ever shoot. For instance 35 Remington. I have about 400 loaded rounds ready to go. I probably shot 20 rounds this year. My dad's house burnt down last October. He lost some of his gun but we were able to recover ammo. I have more 30-06, 243 Win and 308 ammo than I think I will use. Maybe next year when my schedule changes and I have longer stretches of time off I will get to the range more often. I would like to get out once a week like I used to before switching full time jobs.

Now I do most of my loading in the winter. I have a list going on what needs to be loaded this winter. 44 Mag I am down to 60 rounds. Hopefully 59 rounds on Monday (deer hunting). 41 Mag 50 rounds. I need to work on 7.62x39. I have some Hornady soft points and Speer Gold Dot bullets to work with. 450 Bushmaster this is a beast and I am looking forward to working with this round. 10mm as I m really low on this now. 700 180gr XTP waiting to be stuffed in a case. I haven't shot much 9mm in the past couple of years but this year that changed when I got a Glock 43 and XDM. Now I need to load for that to. Hopefully NOAA was right an we will have a mild winter her in MN so I can get to the range and test some of these rounds out.

If you are afflicted by the "If I can load for it, why not?" bug, don't start casting your own bullets! :P

Loaded up some 155g XTP I had laying around I think for a friend that was using them in 40 cal but I loaded in 10mm using 9.0g Power Pistol. Alliant had it in the 10g area but I thought that was a little high. There site has been raising there levels lately but I don't like it that hot.  Craig

Not much really ...
Cleaned up my branch. Sorted all the brass and bullets. Set up my Star sizer/luber. Set the pot up with lead standing by. Secured loading bench to the wall. And finally cleaned top to bottom. Still more to go but hey ... it's a start

200 rounds of 10mm today, 165 gr. fmj from Everglades with 10gr. of Power Pistol. Max load per Alliant's website. Should be about 1300 plus FPS. My usual load is 9.6 but with the new Springfield xdm in hand I thought I start with some S&B factory then some Sig Sauer and finish with full power loads. With any luck I'll get to the range this week.
