Morning Shadow / sqlbullet
I'm not sure if it was you or sqlbullet who reduced the flared mag well on their Rock Island Ultra FS HC 10mm, but would like to attempt this, as carry seems more difficult in its current configuration. Any directions / steps to accomplish this would be great
Thanks again
Ken

Thanks TXCOONDOG, I wasn't able to locate it when I was hunting around
The magwell reduction looks potentially troublesome, just don't want to cob up my dandy new pistol
It took me a long period of back and forth before I was able to force myself to do it. Kinda like underlining that first verse in a brand new bible. You know you have to mark it up if you are going to study, but it just seems so wrong at the start.
If you aren't comfortable with a grinder, then a file, then a big stack of sandpaper, you might wanna start on a different project. But it is worth it to develop the skills.
Great analogy in regards to the first underlining in a new Bible; always struggled with that too. Will need to think hard on this one. Thanks!
I don't know your history or skill level with a file.
There are the old skills of filing a ball or filing a cube as a way to learn metal file skills. I don't do well with tasks for task sake, so I made a knife.
I bought an 18" length of O1 tool steel on amazon, and a couple of Nicholson files from Home Depot, and went to work on making a blade. I still haven't finished it. It is about 90% done. But the process I went through taught me a bunch about using a file.
Next up was fitting a Ed Brown beavertail to a Para P16. Had to cut a radius on the tang of the frame, then relieve a bunch of steel from the frame. The radius cut was pretty easy since a radius jig for the job kinda prevents you from screwing it up. Once the radius is cut and you can get the part in place but you have a new guide that you can use to limit your cuts. So, these two guides helped me understand how far to go and gave me some comfort that I was not removing too much material.
Starting out with re-shaping this part is a big "first step" into this arena. Work up to it. It would be nice if RIA sold an alternate magwell that was not as huge.
Thanks, I believe I could do it, but think that I'll hold off for now : )
From the pics Sqlbullet posted on the other thread, that magwell looks a lot like the Smith & Alexander full profile mag guide. http://www.smithandalexander.com/guides.html (http://www.smithandalexander.com/guides.html)
So, if you totally screw it up, you should be able to order a replacement...at just $95.95 :o
Jeff
It is not the same, though I suspect the Smith & Alexander could work if foo-bar. The S&A version has the mainspring housing integrated, where the Armscor product does not. It is more like the old Dawson Well for Para P-14/16 from the '90's.
Before I started on mine I verified that Armscor had it in their webstore. At the time they did, though more recently they have not. Probably could get them to sell you one with a phone call though.
Thanks sqlbullet, I think I'll leave it as it is for now. Proper concealment shouldn't be an issue in our cold months
