Title: 10mm is a pussycat
Post by: blaster on April 26 2018 05:54:01 AM MDT
lately I have been mostly shooting my 10mm Witness. my full house reloads have a pretty stout recoil. well, the other day I decided to dust off my S&W 629 .44 mag. since I got the 10mm it has been a safe queen. the witness is lighter, more compact and plenty powerfull so it has gotten all the attention. I got a reality check!  :o ; after shooting a box or so of my full house .44 mags. then shooting the 10 mm., the 10mm felt like a .22!!! I knew the .44 is a lot more powerful than the 10mm but shooting them side by side really made that fact hit home. I'm not putting the 10mm down and it still is my main woods carry but if I ever get the chance to go into big bear country, the .44 will be my main carry! the 10mm will be my back up.  ;D

Yep! Those 44 mags do pack the punch... ;D  My model 29 8 3/8" Nickel was my first hand gun and I can tell you they will reach out there and do the job!  ::)

I'm right there with you Blaster. I had my 629 Classic 6 1/2" w/power port at an indoor range alongside my Kimber 10mm a couple of weeks ago. The muzzle blast alone was enough to draw attention. I could feel it in my chest :)

Don't forget that some of that 10mm recoil gets taken up by the slide. The 44 it's all about you soaking it up. Even my 357 feels more punchy than my Glock 20 shooting comparable bullet weight and power factor loads. A DMP rocoil management system will smooth that 10mm out even more.

I shoot 357M,10mm,41M,44M. 41M in a M57 6",10mm in 1006 and 610 6.5",357M in 6" and 4",and 44M in M69. I've had many varieties of 44M S&Ws' over the years. The 10mms and 41M are in 'big guns' and recoil/blast is not as much as others. 357M in a 4" M19 K-frame is 'stout'. 44M in my M69 L-frame is/was the same as the M629 3" I had. I enjoy shooting the big stuff although others at the range don't appreciate when I fire the big ones. Oh,and I'm 72.

I have 5-10mm's, 2-629 hunters, 1-357mag M&P 340, and 1 Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh. When you have the need to go big John Linebaugh gets the job done. If you want a surprise every time you pull the trigger get an airweight snubnose 357. I have no desire for a S&W 500, one of my Apprentices had the dreaded double tap

My Ruger Redhawk wears a 1X scope.  The extra weight really brings the felt recoil of the 44 mag down.  I have friends with a scopeless redhawk and a Model 29, and they illustrate why the big magnums are in a different league than the 10mm.

My Glock 29 is so much easier to carry than my Redhawk that I leave the 44 behind.  I'd like the benefit of the 305 grain hardcast from my 44 but doesn't do any good when I leave it at camp.

If you are going to compare them based on recoil, shoot both rounds through revolvers with similar weights. I'm not saying the 10mm is stouter, just that you are comparing apples to oranges. I suspect even the same 10mm shot thru a revolver would have much more recoil than the same round thru a semi-auto.

If I remember,next time to the range,I'll take the 1006 5" to compare to the M610 6.5". Then compare the 10mm M610 6.5" to 41M M57 6".

Odd, my Sprg. 10mm 1911 seems to kick a lot harder than my six inch SW 686, both shooting full-house handloads.

44 mag and the like are a lot of fun to be sure. For me, I get a lot more joy out of shooting a hundred full house 10's then a hundred 44's any day of the week

My remaining .44 DA revolver is a 4" S&W Mountain Gun, it's "peppy" with full house loads.  My 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk with Hogue wooden grips moderates those same loads a bit.  In the past my 7.5" Redhawk and 6.5" Custom Deluxe 629 recoiled less but seemed big enough to be crew served.

I'm surprised that my new 3" Wiley Clapp 10mm kicks LESS than my SR1911 10mm with the same loads and the revolver is 4 oz lighter.  I read an article by "Revolver guy" that came to the same conclusion.  Of them all the SR1911 is the only one that I can get three hits in the body of a Pepper Popper before it hits the ground using full house ammo.

The worse recoil I ever encountered was a 2" Scandium .357 magnum J frame.  That rascal would dice your thumb knuckle with the cylinder latch and catch your eyebrows on fire with the muzzle blast.

I have 5.5" Custom Blackhawk in  41 GNR which is a 44 necked to 41. 28 Grains of WW296 over a 175 Grain Sierra is something to behold. This custom Blackhawk drops deer like the hammer of Thor came down on them. The muzzle blast in that short Barrel is really significant. I actually like this gun over my 44 magnums.

... If you want a surprise every time you pull the trigger get an airweight snubnose 357.

I ran some Underwood 180 grain .357's through my S&W 340pd AirLite snubnose yesterday, and it flat out hurt. Hurt like catching a fast pitch billiard ball barehanded. Average velocity was 1020 fps...pretty stout for a 180 grain coming out of a short little barrel.

The Underwood 158 grain .38 special +p's averaged 1010 fps, and were a LOT easier on my hands.

Winchester Silvertip 145 grain .357's hurt almost as much as the Underwood 180's, and averaged 1035 fps.

With .38 specials the weapon is easy to shoot all day long. With .357's it's just miserable. I don't think I've ever shot more than ten .357 rounds per session.

After shooting the 340PD my Glock 20 felt like a hand massage every time I pulled the trigger...
