Title: 200gr Hornady HAP; What I have so far..
Post by: RDub01 on April 18 2018 12:40:45 PM MDT

Hello
I wanted to share what I've done with 200gr bullets in a more concise manner. This started back in '12 and stopped in '16.  I've posted some of this before but host sites and websites change and stuff gets corrupted.
So here is what I've got so far..

Glock 20-SF factory barrel and spring
Velocity data taken over a Oehler Mod 33 chronograph; sky screens centered at 10' from muzzle.  Range 25 yards.  New Starline brass used throughout.

I did a little preliminary shooting with some Hornady 200gr HAP bullets. This is the first time shooting any 200gr bullets in this gun.

Well, first off I found out 10.0grs of Blue Dot is too hot for this gun using the WLP primers.. I Got smileys on all but one out of five cases. 9.7grs is about max here..

8.2grs LONGSHOT was a bit too hot as well.. I got smileys on three of five cases.
800-X did pretty well. I could take it up one notch. Case measurements were fairly consistent.

2400 was kinda weird as pressures were all over the place but, gotta say it was pretty accurate. But if velocity is a factor, 2400 is not so good.
This is the very first time I had a split in a new Starline case..

I also got a split case with 13.0grs of AA#9. So that's two today.

I've heard on more than one occasion that VIHTAVUORI loading data is a little off.. I would have to agree here.
According to the case head measurements, I could take this up a notch or two.

But the winner today has to be 13.5grs AA#9..
Good velocity, good accuracy, acceptable and consistent pressure.

So went back to the range with some more loads and bumped some up a bit.

N-105 maxed out at 10.4grs. As I recall, this load was very compressed.
9.0grs of 800-X was way too hot for this gun with the WLP primer.  However, using the Rem 2½ primer, 9.0grs. of 800-X ties for the second best load.
I don't recall what happened to the 2400 data. Could have been the bark was messing up the chrono's brain. After a conversation with Mr. Oehler about this phenomenon, I now put the box behind me while shooting 10mm.  Problem went away.

Next time I shot a few corrected loads;

This time pressures with 8.5grs. of 800-X/WLP were good, but accuracy not so good this time.
9.3grs. 800-X/Rem2½ was fairly fast and accurate but a little too warm.  In hotter weather might be a problem.
7.9grs. Longshot/Rem 2½ was just about right for pressure.

So in '16 I did a ladder with AA#7/CCI300 and two ladders with 3N38, using Rem 2½ and WLP primers. I ran out of the HAP bullets so I had to use some XTP's with one of the 3N38 ladders.

10.8grs of AA#7 is a good load.
It seems 3N38 has a preference towards Rem2½ primers.  9.8grs. with the Rem2½ primer is tied for second best load.

I noticed that all the preferred loads, with the exception of AA#9, are all hovering around 1120 fps.

Just for the heck of it, here is a link to the only 200gr factory load I worked with;

Here is the excel sheet for all the pertinent data;

And here is a velocity graph to get a bird's eye view;

That's it for now..

Great Info RDub01!  I went look to see if I could fix the link that didn't show see quote below.

QuoteI noticed that all the preferred loads, with the exception of AA#9, are all hovering around 1120 fps.

It is missing the IMG tag but even with the tags it wouldn't show that picture...

Hey Shadow
That link points to a folder (gallery) of four pics in Postimage. So I don't think it should have an IMG associated with it.
I can see the pics fine from here from that link..  Let me know if there is something I can do to help.

And Thanks!
