Title: Some 180gr cast FN not feeding consistently
Post by: Kenk on February 26 2018 03:38:49 AM MST
Morning,
Question on Missouri Bullet Factory 180gr - IDP # 5 FN cast not feeding constantly with an OAL of 1.255 - 1.26. If I re-seat these shorter, say to 1.245-1.25, should I re-crimp? I use a stand alone crimp die separate from seating?, or should they be fine after lessening the the OAL that little? I am shooting these from G20, gen 4 with a KKM barrel
Thanks

Ken

Not feeding and not chambering are worlds apart.  I have had some issue with this bullet style feeding but never made a study of why.  Not chambering in an aftermarket barrel has me wondering if your overall case diameter (around the bullet part) is too large for the chamber.  Do you use the Lee Factory Crimp die?  It effectively solves this problem for me.  Or can you drop the cartridges in the barrel (barrel out of the gun) and just get a "plunk"?  It is possible your bullets are seated too long.  It is possible you have buildup or lead/junk in the front of the chamber.  It is possible the overall case diameter is too big for the chamber.  There are other possibilities but this is where I would start.

It's always a good idea to compare these tests with the OEM barrel and with factory ammo.

Gook luck with this!

Nope, chambers fine, pretty sure the few are just to long. I use the hornady stand alone crimp die, and also check every rd with my go / no- gauge

So if I have to lessen the OAL slightly, do I need to re-crimp?
Thanks

Do NOT try to seat any deeper if your cartridges are already crimped!  If you try it you will likely buckle the casing wall or start to shave the bullet material against the casing edge.

The 1.2500" to 1.2600" should be just fine with those bullets.  If your rounds are not feeding then you might try to bump them in a LEE FCD pressing them about half way inside...  The Hornady sizer may be too tight and squeeze the bullet too much
