Title: Any advantages of using Blue Dot over Long Shot?
Post by: Kenk on February 23 2018 04:23:28 AM MST

Morning Folks,
Any advantages of using Blue Dot over Long Shot?, or vise versa, I typically shoot 180gr XTP's from my G20, gen 4 with a factory length KKM barrel. My standard BD load is 10.4, and 9.1 LS
Thanks

Ken

I use primarily Blue Dot in that same load and higher.  It is a good all-around powder for my SR1911, and accurate as well.  I will start using Longshot soon, hopefully very soon if the weather hold out, so I can't say much about it just yet.  I've read on this forum and elsewhere that generally speaking, BD results in better accuracy, while LS gives higher velocities.

Longshot is cleaner, meters a little better.  But I have more Blue Dot.

I can not argue about Blue Dot being more accurate for me in many of my handgun calibers.
When I first got started in 10mm handloading Jan 1990, I developed Blue Dot loads because of my amazing results in the other calibers, to bring near the upper velocity while keeping pressures lower.  That was also true in heavy shotgun loadings as well, of which was my go to powder for my duck hunting and small game loads.

Some of my most accurate loads was 10.2 to 10.4 grains behind my cast Speer 175 grain (swc)TC and shortly there after the Lyman 175 grain TC.  Later as some load data was published it shows some Blue Dot loads that matched what I had...
