Title: Hardcast deformities- is this bad?
Post by: SPDSR on February 03 2018 08:45:04 PM MST
Finally decided to try these hardcast loads. Received them today and 3 of the 50 have these melted looking deformities. What might of caused this? Should I be concerned?

Contact DT send pics they would likely replace them.

Poor quality control on the part of whatever commercial caster they got the bullets from.  Those type of deformities happen when the mold blocks are not properly heated, have oil residue still in them, or possibly some debris.

I think DT makes their own and we have seen this issue in the past.

Yup.  DT goofed.  Do not shoot them.  No doubt they will replace them... plus some.

DT says they hand inspect every round lol. I wonder if the other 47 rounds are g2g. They look fine.

Lead and/or mold not hot enough, or there was some type of contamination.

The will still shoot, but they will be out-of-balance and not as accurate as properly made bullets.

If you paid money for them return them.

Per Doubletap, they have been having problems with their hardcast molds and looking to get a new one. They have been trying to pick out all the ones with deformities before shipping, and they are sorry I received some they overlooked. They are safe to shoot so nothing will be replaced.

Gee, am I thrilled.

So doubletap has some problem with the machines making their bullets, keep making the problem bullets anyway, clearly don't hand inspect every round like they brag, and won't make it right with replacement or something either? So they have a terrible record for velocities being way off, and they have crappy manufacturing processes, QC, and customer service too?  They just need to be eliminated from the serious 10mm ammo options category all together. What a sketchy company.

Pity... There is noting like cheezy customer service to make a customer wish he spent his money elsewhere.  It is so easy to make lemonade out of lemons but apparently DT does not get it.

I would be pushing back hard on this.  Safe to shoot so they are fine works great if I paid $30-35/100 for practice ammo.  But premium ammo that costs $1 a shot I expect significantly more than "safe".

I got a couple of boxes of poorly cast WFNGC hardcast  from Doubletap a few years ago. They were a lot worse than those in the first post here. The distortion came from casting in a cold mold. I know sh!t happens in any production, but with ammo I'd think someone would actually examine what they are sending to customers. What Doubletap sent as a replacement was actually a second example of zero quality control. I didn't want more hardcast, so I asked for some Nosler JHP. The ammo they sent had the hollow point full of some sort of tumbling media that looked like fish eggs, (hopefully they were not tumbling the loaded ammo).

And for those of us perusing additional ammo, it makes the purchase decision easy! Those are some rough looking bullets. Guess they don't understand how news gets around.
