Sutherland Springs is 21 miles SW of San Antonio Courthouse. Probably less from where I live.
I'm against gun bans but I'll go along with banning assault rifles. I used to have an AR15 and I thought that it's a great self defense weapon because of high capacity and rapid fire. Then I thought it also can wreck havoc on people. I decided to get rid of it.
I'm keeping my 10mm pistol and my 12 gauge pump.
If a ban kept bad people from getting "assault rifles" it could be worth considering. Sad truth is, bad people still get weapons illegally. The issue at hand is a people problem, not a gun problem. Consider how alternative means are used, such as trucks, knives, bombs, bats, clubs, machetes and so forth. I hope this doesn't turn into a bashing session. There's real issues out there and hopefully we can take the time to try and talk through them.
So Olgo, I want to be clear I understand. Your concern is the death of people? Is that solely limited to violent death? Death caused by others? That helps clearly define the scope of the issue, potential causes, and then solutions worth looking into.
Not all were baddies, some snapped. I agree that a ban ain't gonna work though. For a while I thought we don't need assault rifles but then on second thought, maybe we do.
Adam Lanza perfectly illustrates why banning "assault" pattern guns won't work. This man was determined enough he killed his own mother to get a gun.
What is killing a police officer to take his patrol rifle next to that? Or going the Dillinger route and breaking into a nation guard base?
The machines exist. How people use them is the fault of the people, not the machine.

You are almost twice as likely to be beaten to death in the US as to be killed by a rifle. And that asterisk? That number is ANY rifle, not "assault" pattern rifles. The vast majority of those rifle homicides are hunting rifles and 22's.
You wanna fix violence in America? Address the causes, not the tools.

I guess the best solution is to have guards at peaceful gatherings such as churches and theaters but not at public gatherings such as festivals and marathons.

Passed multiple NICS background checks recently when purchasing firearms.
EXACTLY the red flag whack-job the system is supposed to identify and protect against but low and behold bureaucracy fails AGAIN!
San Bernadino, Newtown, Aurora, Las Vegas, Orlando, Washington Navy Yard, Tucson, Charleston, etc., etc. the system fails to identify and stop lunatics from carrying out horrific crimes.
There definitely seems to be readily detectible red flags around mental health in the majority of these crimes. It also seems that people around them pretty clearly see the issues, and even they've been reported. I'm with Rojo27 on this event. How did he not get flagged on NICS?
A sarcastic side note, one of the real killers in this country is heart disease!
