Title: Grand Power P40L 10mm Durability
Post by: RenoShooter on October 22 2017 02:16:13 PM MDT
Hi All:

Does anyone have experience with the Grand Power P40 or P40L? Particularly one chambered in 10mm.

I am interested in that pistol as the rotating barrel is claimed to absorb recoil. However, I worry about it's ability to withstand repeated use of full power 10mm loads.

My current 10mm is Smith & Wesson 1006 purchased new in the early '90's. My interest is in replacing it with the Grand Power 5" barrel or a Glock 40. The additional magazine capacity, of it and the Grand Power, as well changing cartridge to .40 S&W with a barrel swap has appeal.

Will appreciate any thoughts.

Best regards,

Bernie

Welcome to the forum Bernie!  I had thought about getting one of the GP P40 pistols, but haven't jumped on that one.  The rotating barrel lock up does interest me.

I have the G-20 and G-29 and both are fantastic pistols and yes having conversion barrels does offer some extra trigger time with 40S&W and 357 Sig and 9x25 Dillon.  The Glocks and all the aftermarket goodies make them a go to pistol!

I also started with the S&W 1006 first of 1990 and it has been a superb firearm from day one.  I was able to obtain directly from Bar-Sto the match grade 40S&W and from mike McNett the Bar-Sto 9x25 Dillon conversion which I hand fitted to the 1006.  These make for very unique part of that pistol's hstory... ;D

Hi Shadow,

Thanks for the thoughts. If Bar-Sto, or someone, was still producing .40 S&W barrels for the 1006 this thread might be academic. Like the 1006 and love the 10mm, but might like the option of shooting the 'small & weak' on occasion. Have been interested in the GP for quite some time. Was looking for a 9mm K100 until acquiring a CZ P10C. Would enjoy hearing any durability issues.
Best regards,
Bernie

I have a P40 in 10mm, 4.25" barrel as I recall, have had it for a year or so now. Is there something in particular you wanted to know?

I have put a couple thousand rounds through mine and it shoots as good as they day I received it. Recoil and the resulting brass deposition is much better than a G20 or other Browning recoil. The only shortcoming is not being able to get night sights for it and I may have that resolved, I should know in a few days. Very accurate.

Hi PC Florida,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been traveling.

My query relates to the strength of the GP P-40 or P-40L in 10mm. My concern relates to the horror stories which surface about full power 10mm loads causing extreme wear and, in some cases, part failures.

I really feel the GP P-40L-10 is an ideal pistol for the load and am considering selling my 1006 and replacing it with the Grand Power.

Will appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,

Bernie

Well I wouldn't want to be responsible for you selling the 1076 (though I sold mine a few years ago).

The P40 seems to be incredibly strong. Last year I was working up some loads and had a 200 grain XTP moving at 1250 or so. I have it posted on here somewhere. The P40 didn't complain at all, in fact I really couldn't tell it was such a hot load. The action really smooths it out and the brass is in the same zip code. I'm quite happy with it and once I get the night sights sorted out it will become my winter EDC. I have a front sight coming tomorrow that may resolve it, otherwise I will be having a tritium vial installed in a spare sight.

Enjoy!

Finally!!!

I got a CZ-75 front night sight (already had the rear sights) and had to file it a small amount (and I knew that). Fits like a charm and doesn't seem to be any problem with height. I shot it in the front yard and it held zero so I'm stoked. Took over a year to find one but at least I didn't have to have one made.

The Amazon part # is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IL7OB6S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, I will take pictures tomorrow. The rear sight is GP15C (rear sight Tritium Fiber optic green). I am very happy.

Bought the bullet. Was able to work out a favorable deal with a local gun shop. The 1006 went to them and a GP P40 is on its way to me. Would have preferred the P40L, but after many phone calls could not find a distributor with one in stock.

Will probably pick up a .40 S&W barrel as soon as fitting and recoil spring queries are answered. If anyone has thoughts PLEASE don't be quiet.

You will need new mags. I know that because I was sent the wrong ones at one point. The .40 mags have an added rib on the back.

Large pictures ahead, I didn't want to resize in case there was some detail you wanted to see. I have switched to Imgur.com
