Title: 180gr lead blue dot loads
Post by: Kenk on October 01 2017 08:19:21 AM MDT
Morning Folks,
I have been loading 10mm 180gr XTP's with 10.5gr of Blue Dot, and want to start loading lead. I picked up some Missouri Bullet Company 180 Grain TCFP / Brinell 18 bullets, and would like to work up some 180gr blue dot loads. I will be shooting these in a G20 with a factory length KKM barrel. Any ideas on an accurate load, and or min-max loads you have worked up would be great
Thanks in advance

Kenk, you will be fine at 10.4 grains with the 180 Cast bullets, you could drive them a little harder but 10.4 is like a sweet spot.
COL would be 1.2520"  CCI300 velocity about 1150 - 1180 fps

So Shadow,
If I were to load them up with Powder Pistol (everything else the same) as I have both powders on hand, what would you recommend for a sweat spot
Thanks again for your help!!!

I would start with 8.3 grains of Power Pistol and work up to a 9.3 grain max load at 1300 fps.

I would also say that with bullets that hard you will need to match the powder to the desired speed.  Full charges of Blue Dot probably won't lead the bore, but light charges/loads do in my guns.  Not enough pressure to obturate the base of the bullet and seal the bore.

Hey Folks, so with the 180gr lead, which Propellent, Powder Pistol, or Blue Dot, would perform better with this weight lead ...and why?

So..First, every gun is different.  With cast bullets we are right on the edge of the performance limits of the projectile so what your gun likes can be a big deal. What works for my gun may not be good for your gun.

I would favor Power Pistol as a starting point.  I find that lead bullets do better in my guns with the fastest powder that can deliver the velocity I want.  For a 200 grain bullet, Blue Dot all the way.  And for a lighter bullet, say 155 grain, power pistol for sure.  180 grain is kinda in between.
