I'm just not interested until we start Burning Books!  451 deg Fahrenheit will get my attention.

What pains me is that neither opinion seems to realize that their angst is being instigated by a third party whose only interest in unrest.  I'm a black guy that doesn't give two turds about any statue that is already paid for.  Yes, I have opinions about appropriate spending but what's done is done.

I'm half tempted to set a watch for indications that someone has targeted the statue of Sul Ross at Texas A&M - I don't see that'n moving or being vandalized.  To date, I've skipped two counter protests and expect to bat 1000.

Book Burning* ... you heard it here first.

*this is Sarcasm!  If the notion doesn't scare the crap out of you ... you simply ain't right.

Fahrenheit 451 is a classic.....

When it comes to history, your not wiping it out by trashing statues..., it's a action rousted up by a third party as you said... All bs imo

The movement that fueled the hate and discontent started long be for Trump was even running for office.  The political winds of unrest are blowing like a hurricane and the protesters are pushing their sails up into the wind, with some crashing on to rocky shores...
What does this mean in the long run?  A failure for law and order while these statements of unrest and criminal activities run the gauntlet with law enforcement's being exploited with their hands being shackled as it unfolds...

It will take a serious display of force rounding up many of them, bring them to justice and publicly disciplining them as a group.  They need to pay back the damages for the destruction caused, but likely have no monies to do so.  Should they be jailed and made to do community service?
Even then that may not curb the movements as they have been allow to go unchecked for too long!

Both sides of the Big Greedy Government Gone Wild for power over the people have their pockets stuffed with big corporate money and they are work for them as the people are mere pawns in the greed!

Guys, Confederacy reminds the Blacks that they were once slaves and they hated it. I cannot blame them.

I've never been a slave.  My ancestors were not slaves.

Yes, my ancestors were imported and enslaved.  The enslavement was wrong and it was survived by strength and resolution.  I'm proud of the lines that fought and escaped; I'm proud of the great great grandpappy that advantaged an education to purchase his own freedom; And, I'm proud of those that survived their circumstance to establish my potential.

The folks that enslaved my ancestors are long dead.

Did I mention that I have never and will never be a slave?  I'm sure I haven't mentioned that my mother's middle name tributed Robert E. Lee?

*Edit to explain that this isn't an attack on Olgo's empathy. Rather, it is my attempt to share the foundation of this black man's perspective.

There are lots of perspectives on the confederate rememberances.

My wife was raised in an environment where she was primarily exposed to the negative perspectives.  I was raised in a rural environment where the stars and bars were pretty common.  This difference of upbringing has led to more than one interesting conversation.

I don't think I agree that all black people are reminded that they were once slaves by confederate emblems.  I do think some people, regardless of race, like to use such rhetoric to drive political gain.

The civil war is interesting to me in that the North was against slavery, and that is what they fought for.  Every one of them.

But it does not follow that the confederates were pro slavery, and that is what they all fought for.  Many southern people were fighting for the concept of states rights.

And in the end the north and the south were both right, and both wrong.  The North was right to insist that slavery was wrong, and had to be ended.  They were right to say that the federal government could, and should halt and roll back that evil.

But the south was right that certain (most?) rights should be reserved to the states.  And then our lives are generally better when government at the federal level is weaker and at the local level is stronger.

I think there are aspects of the confederacy that merit inspection today.  Even if I didn't think that, I think there is value in ALL our history, even that which is not particularly complimentary.

Well said Mr. Dred.  The deep character, perseverance, hard work and boundless potential past down to you from your ancestors is a model and examples all Americans can find meaning and communion with.

We live in a carnival mirror world where extremely complex and nuanced historical events are run through convex & concave optics to distorted and project political "narratives" any particular group wants to promote.

The Civil War yielded nearly 700,000 deaths (both sides) and further millions & millions of wounded & displaced.  Fought over 4 years all across the countryside.  Separating and fracturing families and pitting them one against the other.

No.  Nobel though it would be, one cannot accurately state that Union Soldiers from every walk of life fought specifically to end the oppression of a whole group of people.  Nor can one claim that the multitude of dirt poor rural farm boys, many of which marched and fought barefoot for the Confederacy did so explicitly to keep the same group of people in bondage.
As in all things human; it was so much deeper than that.

Yet, no doubt the differing sides will continue to adulterate and frame the symbols of earlier era to mean whatever they wish to convey.
