Title: PPU 180 Grain JHP
Post by: 4949shooter on December 01 2012 04:22:22 AM MST
Yesterday I picked up some PPU 180 grain JHP at my local FFL for $16.50 per box / 50.

Has anybody shot these? How are they, pretty anemic?

Weakest 10mm round I have fired. Pleasant to shoot and soft on the hands. Except for the 952nd round fired from the case that happened to be a double charge. Split my grips, and pushed the remaining 5 rounds down into the mag, compressing the mag spring and collapsing the mag lips inward. Both grips and mag unsalvageable.

This may have been a one time thing for PPU, but it has made me hesitant to shoot it anymore. I would suggest weighing each round and looking for consistency.

Ouch thanks for the heads up. I won't buy any more of it.

How did you verify it was a double charge? Their have been thousands upon thousands of PPU rounds put down range. This is the first I have heard of a failure. I have no less than three of my calibers that have had PPU through zero problems.

Brings me back to my statement of be prepared! Wear your safety equipment and even gloves if you can. It will happen! It has to me and I am sure I shoot enough will again. It's like the saying about riding a Motorcycle... everyone goes down. I found out that first-hand too. I sold my bike because my Wife got hurt as well and this was about our 15th time avoiding something. Monitor what you can on ammo but I don't know of any that hasn't experienced a shortcoming at some point. If you can't deal with something happening or become "gun-shy" it's time to hang them up. My .002 on ammo.

I can't see it being anything but a double charge. The case was blown out from the bottom where the chamber support ends in that barrel.  PPU isn't loaded hot enough for that to happen due to lack of support.  I was shooting a slow fire target session. Slide was in full battery and lockup.

The recent test I did said not too bad and I would have to look again but better than BVAC.

It could have been the brass or any of a number of things. That doesn't let them off the hook but unless you have the full picture with maybe another round showing excess powder it's speculation at best.

Very good points. No real way to know for sure. Either way I'm soured on PPU. It's unfortunate since its so cheap and easy shooting.

I'm not blaming you for not wanting to shoot it! I feel the same for the old Golden Bullet .22's but now they improved them. I did shoot some of the new ones even after I had my little fiasco with the old stuff. If I had an Underwood or other MFG go boom I would shy away until I/they figured out what happened. The Golden bullets were getting reports almost daily with pictures of failed cartridges in different platforms. Whalaa "new and improved" ammo shortly after.

I have run around a thousand rounds of the PPG stuff so far in my Glock 29. For the range I like the stuff a lot. It burns clean, shoots accurate and I have yet to have a single issue with reliability or consistency.
On the range I want a solid performer that is on the weaker side when i'm running a few hundred rounds. I however only carry full power loads.

As long as your getting your full share of carry loads off. That's what is most important.

Today my buddy and I shot the PPU through my G20SF. It ran without a hitch, 20 pound recoil spring and all.
