Title: Range day with my first 10mm reloads
Post by: CurtisM on May 27 2017 06:51:00 AM MDT
I loaded these rounds about a month ago and I finally got around to spending several hours at the range yesterday, with part of the time being spent testing some of my first try at 10mm reloading.  I have attached the spreadsheet with the equipment, loading data, chronograph data, etc.

I'm not impressed with the accuracy from a sandbag @ 25 yards with any of the loads so I haven't found the right mix yet.   I'm not sure about the powder either, which we have discussed in my other post.

Hey Curtis, thanks for your report.  WSF is a faster burning powder and usually suited for target loads.  There are many great powders that work well with the 10mm cartridge.

Berry's bullets can be good, but some have had accuracy issues with them.  Glock's factory bore can be 0.402" and if the Berry's are  only 0.400" or less, they may not grab the polygonal rifling as well.  We have seen this in cast bullets as well.  (I size my own cast bullets to 0.4015".)
The cores of these plated bullets are very soft lead with a thin electroplated jacket applied.  I would suggest trying a good jacketed bullet for your accuracy testing.

There is also an expression, "Aim Small - Miss Small".  This refers to a small aiming spot to line up your sight to as to refine your sight picture.  Where the spot of some targets have a 6" spot vs. say a Dime size spot.

Also, most factory sights are combat type and not a finer target style.  So keep that in mind as well.

Best of luck getting things dialed in like you want.  :D

Such a rewarding feeling doing any cartridge  the first time. I still get the feeling when trying a new combination. Why WSF? I should find your other post. I've never used it, and frankly it's not on my list of great/supposed to be great 10mm powders. I'm pretty much a Longshot, AA #7, AA #9, Blue Dot and BE-86 guy. (Guessing WSF is closer to AA#2/AA #5??)

EDIT: WSF is between AA#2 and AA #5 on the ballpark burn rate chart

Thanks The_Shadow for the feedback.

I will work on some more WSF loads and hopefully get something that works pretty good before I turn it into fertilizer!  :)  I currently have some AA#9 and BE-86 on order based upon feedback from this forum.

I have quite a few of the Berry's right now but have been looking into The Blue Bullet, Black Bullet, ACME, etc.  I just don't want to get into casting right now, but might be a future endeavor.

As for the stock sights on the G20, it appears that they are setup for the pumpkin on a fence post sight picture and the larger target @25 yards is close.  Haven't looked into any other sights yet.

Why WSF?

The LGS where I get some of my supplies talked me into it.

I do have some AA#9 and BE-86 on the way right now.

Will post more of my reloading soon.

Thanks.

Very cool!

I should have mentioned I do shoot Berry's from time to time, but keep my expectations low. Strangely out of my carbine, at healthy velocities the general  accuracy is not terrible - BUT with an occasional flyer that is 4" or so wild. I started to suspect something I was doing, but it NEVER happens with HAP bullets, for example.

Curtis, If you had a aftermarket barrel with conventional rifling you would likely see much better accuracy from the Berry's bullets.
Not a bad option for less stress on the brass expansion to aid in reloading.

You can just continue to use the Berry's and not worry about the inaccuracy and practice close quarter drills to build proficiency.

Another option is if you know someone who powder coats bullets, then try powder coating the Berry's bullets to add to their diameter some before loading.  They will need to be washed with acetone or MEK before powder coating.

I pushed one of the Berry's 180gr Round Should slugs through my barrel and just as you have said already, the bullet barely touched the outer bore.  There was some light traces of it contacting the bore, but VERY minimal.

I went back and looked at some of my bookmarked bullets to buy and Eggleston Munitions (http://www.egglestonmunitions.com/shop.html#!/40-10mm-180gr-Bulk-Pack-2-500-Count/p/76969485/category=10873434) gives you the option for .400" , .401" or .402" diameters.  What has anyone's experience been with Eggleston for accuracy?

More to learn!!

I do find the Xtreme heavy plated 180s to be more accurate than the Berrys....
If you want to try some , I could drop some in the mail for you

Thanks for the offer of the Xtreme bullets, however I have more (1,000 - 180gr and 500 - 200gr) Berry's on the way so I'm good with plated for a while (accurate or not). I have a friend that was making a run to Powder Valley and he gets an excellent price so that is why I stocked up.  I think I'm going to look at coated bullets while I'm exhausting my plated supply.  I shoot 100% The Blue Bullets in my G19 and am very satisfied with them,  but not sure if the blue coating will work in the 10mm.  It is different from coated.

Bayou Bullets make an excellent coated bullet.   I shoot their 9mm, 10mm and .45 acp bullets almost exclusively through my guns.

The mailman really hates me on those delivery days.  :)

I can relate to that, last October my mailman hated me with my 9mm bullet orders.

Thanks for the info on suggestion for the Bayou Bullets, will have to try them.

For relatively lower cost, darned accurate bullets, try 180gr HAP - Hornady Action Pistol.

I think people have caught on to the HAP bullets. Don't see sales as often. Now sold out!!

I was looking and found that Powder Valley (https://www.powdervalleyinc.com) has them in stock.  Haven't compared prices and shipping yet.

Here is the bad news........when this deal came out, we all backed up the truck. I have not seen such a deal since, but there is nothing wrong with these bullets. The boxes even say HAP on them
