Title: S&B 180gr FMJ Velocity Test Video
Post by: Intercooler on February 17 2017 07:21:04 AM MST

Seems low compared to what I saw. I need to look this one up!

Hey thanks for posting these over here :) I have a few more to upload. It seems the Sig was the only one I've tested that's actually 10mm specs. The others all have been barely better than .40S&W

S&B is only somewhat affordable 10mm ammo where i live. Its rather mild which is why i reload now.

I didn't know it was that weak. The price is the only reason I buy this.

Wow!! the stuff I chrono last Aug was doing 1150-1160 fps through both my Colt Delta and my Kimber, as a matter of fact it wasn't that much slower then the Win Silver Tip stuff that cost alot more !! and was about = to the Rem ammo which also is alot more $$
I like the S&B ammo and whenever I am runing low on brass to reload I will open up a new box and shoot it so then I have newer brass for my reloads. Works for me  :)

Great for kids and new shooters.  Especially if a 10mm is the only handgun in your arsenal.  And lets be honest.  Don't we buy 10mm in part for its ability to fill almost any role, mild to wild.

Not great by 10mm standards. But at least they are offering a 10mm.

We will have to get Intercooler to keep harassing S&B to bump up the loading like he did with PPU.  ;)

PPU is loaded hot now?? Did I miss something? I do remember last year when I first got my Colt and bought some ammo so I would have some brass to work up some loads. I got some Rem ,Win and Sig ammo and I recall that the 1st Sig stuff was loaded hotter then the other 2 lots I got through the course of the summer, and it was by alot like 75fps. I still have all 3 lots and the 1st stuff is loaded hotter I will chrono them all at the same time :o

Not loaded hot by 10mm standards. Though Intercooler did get them to increase the velocity by 100 fps or so, I believe.

Weird. I ran 5 rounds from two boxes over a friend's chrony last fall and it averaged ~1160 fps out of my G20. Wonder if the lot variation is that severe?

I might have some to run again. This same tester gets some low ones compared to my findings every so often. I was in the 1150 FPS range myself.

I am all like bummed out now.

Bought a case thinking 1100fps. Plus. Because S&B in other calibers has been on the warm side. Now depressed.

YES let us ALL contact S&B

Also remember it was 50°F outside. Most tests seem to favor 60+ temp, but a few have pretty temperature stable powders. All the 10mm tests I performed were on the same day :D The AE and PMC weren't much better.

Welcome! Good to see you here and a quick look will turn up plenty of your videos!

The master sheet myself and drsjr1969 have been compiling for a LONG time is stickied here. The ones that seem to be on the 10mm money are PBR, Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Doubletap (some) and Sig-Sauer.

This is why I have a 40sw barrel for my G29 for range fodder. All my 10mm ammo is coming from Underwood.  8)

ETA: let me add that I also buy Sig Elite 10mm 180 FMJ and Hornady 10mm 175 FlexLock. I like them.

Welcome Buffman.  Seen many, many of your videos and appreciate your tests.  Thank you for taking time, effort and expense to document your tests, then share results with everyone else.

I missed the temperature the 1st time but did catch the snow on the ground and was wondering about the potential velocity effect of cold temp....  I could be wrong, but wouldn't expect ambient temp of 50 degrees would degrade performance that much.  Might have been plausible if temp significantly lower.

This post brings up a great point.  Most of my range time is in the negative to teen tempature range. I reglected to consider that.  Back to the handloading bemch and time to go halves on a chrono with my friend here lovally.

Not full house 10mm by any stretch, but 180 FMJ is more a practice round in my mind.  And that is respectable performance for budget ammo.

Yes, for the price and performance the S&B is a good target and practice loading... :D

I think we can reload for the same performance for less money though. I haven't bought any ammo in years, with a few rare exceptions.

Only if you don't count time.  There was a point in my life where things were simpler and I had lots of free time that could be used to pull the lever.  These days with two in college living at home, two in high school and two about to hit middle school, free time is non-existent.  Last range trip we ran out of ammo as I hadn't made up enough.

Thinking of buying 1K just to have on hand.  Stockpile brass until life settles down a bit.  Or maybe I need to add a 650 or even a BL550.

I have a 650 :)

Get one, you will never regret it.

At least the price is right. Better than paying $30 for Armscor or Freedom Munitions, both of which seem pretty weak to me. Hard to beat Underwood. Or apparently even match it.

Interestingly the S&B feeds and runs well in my 10mm AR. Nice!!

PBR makes some nice ammo as well. Everyone seems to go right past them though even at a lower price point.

It's always been Starline brass except if you get the value line. We can thank them for giving us a lot of the off-brand powders to compare what Underwood was using in his. In a way I like their approach with #9 with how safe it is!
