Title: Grand Power vs Glock
Post by: buck on February 05 2017 12:25:30 AM MST
I am looking for a new woods gun. I like my 329pd, but something with a little more capacity.  I have a GP K100 that I  like. And have shot the Glock 20 and 29 and liked both. Just wondering if anyone had experience with both?

Both are fine. Glock is obviously cheaper. Grand Power is around $700 and the Glock 20 is about $585.

Or you could go with a Witness full size steel model. Usually find them for under $500. The new models built after 2012 are great pistols. Upgrade the recoil spring to an 18-22 pound and it will handle any ammo out there. This one on gunbroker has a starting bid of $469. Nobody has bid on it yet and the auction ends tomorrow.  http://www.gunbroker.com/item/617698597

I am looking to keep the weight down since I am looking at going off trail through the woods/mountains. I have seen GP's in the low $600 range in the last week . Since it is a one time buy the extra dollars are no problem. The magazines seem to be twice as much. I like the looks of the Whitness, reminds me of CZ's which I have a few of.

Ok, GP P40 (I have one) vs Glock (20 / 29 I have them both)

They both have similar magazine capacity, the P40 has a 14 round metal mag that sells for $32, Glock magazines are plastic and are typically in the $20 - $24 price range.

The P40 has a novel revolving barrel that greatly reduces felt recoil. I believe it slows down the recoil and thus you feel it less. The Glock has a standard Browning design which does not reduce recoil as much.

The P40 has a quite thinner grip than the 2x4 grip of the Glock. Likely due to the metal magazine vs. the plastic magazine.

The P40 has a decocker, so you can shoot it in DA (every round), DA/SA or SA. You can also carry it cocked and locked. The Glock has one mode.

The P40 is made in Slovakia and the guns have been getting here in dribs and drabs, maybe a slow boat. The Glock is made in America and in Austria and you can buy parts at 7-11. Ok, not quite but almost.

The P40 is a kick ass pistol. The Glock is cool.

I love the P40, I like my Glocks.

Sure is nice to have all these 10mm options these days.

I have been leaning to the P40 side as I really like my K100. I wish there was a bigger holster selection.

Has anyone fired any full power 10mm rounds (i.e. Underwood) in their P40 yet?

I have shot about qty 300 200  grain XTP's with a load of 12.5 of DS037.2 (Shooters World Heavy Pistol). This has been very repeatable and very reliable. I don't recommend anyone else shoots this load. If you do work up to it carefully. It was done in new Starline brass.

To answer your question, yes I have shot some heavy loads through my P40. It has handled them very well, brass has only expanded a very small amount and even with a heavy load like this the recoil is still much less than my Glock.

I ordered from craftholsters.com.
They look like great holsters but you have to wait 8-10 weeks for delivery.

I looked at Craftholster but did not see an option for selecting the P40.

The P45 uses the same size holster according to the grand power people.

Craftholsters are great, they are the ones who make the holsters on the Eagle Imports web site. The company that manufactures them is named Falco, a Slovakian company. The only one I didn't like was the tuckable. It only has one strap and the holster wants to come out with the gun during the draw. You can also use a holster for the K100, that's stamped on the back of the ITW/OTW one I ordered from EI and it fits like a glove. Again, if you don't want to wait as long you can go to The Holster Store and order holsters for the EAA Witness Polymer. I use one for the Polymer Compact and while it covers the trigger, it is not giving full trigger guard coverage, there is a slight gap. I believe that a full size would cover better but would probably leave space at the bottom. I will say that the leather used by The Holster Store seems to be slightly thinner than that used by Falco, but both are holding up fine to wear. Here is a link for The Holster Store's offerings for EAA, hope some of this helps.

I can't seem to find magazines for the p40. Every website says out of stock. Any suggestions?

That is interesting, even Bud's has the pistol now, but no one seems to have the magazines. I would send an Email to Eagle Imports and ask them when they expect to have them in and to put you on the list for them.

I own a P40...So far it's an absolute piece of junk! Save your money and get a Sig, Glock or used Smith 10 series. The pistol jams with any brand of ammo and the magazines fall out every other shot!  It's going back for warranty work .

You may have a lemon or a pistol that needs work, but you certainly can't make the universal statement that the pistol is a piece of junk. There are Glocks and Sigs that have problems also. Mine has been flawless since the first hundred rounds. I had the mag drop problem a few times and no more since. I don't know if something needed to break in or if it was me, but in the last 900 rounds or so no problem with the mags. I own Glocks, a Sig, a RIA and a Colt in 10mm. The Grand Power may not have the fit and finish of my 220-10 as it is partly plastic, but it has almost double the magazine capacity and weighs less. I like it and I shoot it well. Let us know how you are treated and if the gun runs when you get it back from service. Thanks!

Happy to hear yours is running good. Mine drops the mags out while firing. The pistol does have a lifetime warranty for the original owner. I hope the gunsmith can figure it out. I do like the feel of the gun in my hand. Take down and assembly isn't as fast and easy As I like in a semi-auto. Mostly due to the long recoil spring and required indexing of the rotary barrel. I'll get faster with more practice I'm sure.
