Title: Expander die guidelines
Post by: Bro KV on November 19 2012 08:41:23 PM MST
I picked up a Redding expander die for 10mm. I have a box of Rainer 180gr plated bullets to load. How far down should I be running it down?  Thanks guys.

With the plated bullet you will want the base of the bullet to actuall start inside the casing by pushing it by hand like that of cast bullets. The reason for this is not to shave any plating off the bullet as you seat it to depth without any crimp being added.

Take your time and screw the expander adjustment very carefully till you get the bullet to just start inside.

While seating if you see any shaving or damage to the plating add more flairing.

It is also a good idea to seat/crimp in separate steps with either lead or plated bullets.

me too buddy....But I always end up with a little ring of copper or lead when I try to do them in one step.  Hopefully your luck will be better than mine.
