Title: Ammo fired from a Glock 29 vs .40 S&W velocities
Post by: Overkill338 on December 19 2016 04:19:55 AM MST
Here's the data I gathered of shots from stock G29's.
180 Underwood Gold Dot 1231 fps
180 Georgia Arms Gold Dot 1185
180 Underwood XTP 1267
200 Underwood XTP 1143
175 Hornady Critical Duty 1077
175 Critical Duty 1083 (2nd chrono)
175 Winchester Silvertip 1129
(all these are actual chrono'd shots)

Compared to 40 S&W advertised velocities (most are advertised from a 4" barrel)
180 HST 984 (G23 chrono)
80 HST 964 (G27 LuckyGunner)
180 Gold Dot 1025
180 Golden Saber 1015
175 Critical Duty 977.2 (G23 chrono)
175 Critical Duty 970 (G27 LuckyGunner)
180 Underwood Gold Dot 1100
200 Underwood Nosler 950

Its pretty obvious if you aren't carrying a G20 or G40,  that Critical Duty is just a 40 S&W load. The Winchester Silvertips seem like a good mid range power load, for decent follow up shots, but right in 40 land also.

Anyhoo, I've been in bed with the flu and thought I'd share my boredom.

Thank you and I hope you feel better soon. Drink plenty of water. :)

I have a few boxes of 175 grain Hornady Critical Duty and didn't know it was "weak" for a 10mm. I knew it would be slower from my G29, but not .40 S&W slow. I may need to put my factory RSA back in. I'm concerned my heavier one may not like the .40 S&W speed of the Critical Duty. I need to order something different.

I both agree and disagree with this.

On the one hand, yes they do fall right in the ballistic range of full power 40 S&W ammo.

On the other hand, no 40 S&W is going to make these ballistics from a compact barrel length.

This validates what I have said for a long time.  Quality 10mm ammo from a G29 is as good or better than 40 S&W from a service sized pistol.  And, that Underwood ammo is hard for me to control in a full size gun, let alone a G29.

The 40 S&W loads I listed are from 4" barrels. The G29 has a 3.78" barrel.

Edit: found new numbers to compare. See my later post.

Got real chrono data for 40 short&weak
Glock 23
175 Critical Duty 977
180 Federal HST 984
Glock 27 according to Lucky Gunner
175 Critical Duty 970
180 Federal HST 964

Ill add them to my OP

So there is 100 fps difference in Critical Duty when fired from a Glock 23 and a Glock 29. Maybe I will consider carrying it after all. An aftermarket barrel in the 29 will add a little more too.

Olgo got 1231 from UW 180 GD in a stock 29,but with a 3.78" Storm Lake barrel it made 1262.

Yeah...I really like Ballistics by the Inch data as it gives a great real world reference by inch.  I cross checked the data you had above for 40 S&W and determined that, as usual, mfg's were being generous, except maybe for Underwood.

Good data!

Thank you sir,  I've tried to make a good comparison.

That's really good but keep in mind that to make a bullet go 100 fps faster takes quite a bit more powder.  8)

And get well soon mate. I started a new doctor last Fri and he got busy. I got the Shingles and the Pneumonia vaccine shots plus got my blood drawn and peed in a cup.

I'm still a bit woozy and both my arms are still sore. Happy days.  :D

I want to carry Critical Duty now in my 29,but no one will sell me #91255 the 50 Round boxes. I had the 50 Round in 9mm. Hornady's LE site said they can't sell it to me direct.
