Title: Gonna buy my first Glock
Post by: Shotgun on November 30 2016 10:22:55 AM MST
G20 or G29 ? Does the shorter bbl bleed off the 10mm's power? It will be carried, but not EDC. I have never been a fan of the Glock, but the trigger pull has got light years better than the first ones I shot(15 years ago). They really feel nice in my hands and the reliability is still legendary. I made some decent groups with my friends G23. I think it is time to have a Glock of my own.

My general carry is a G20, with a G29 when I need a smaller gun.  Most full power 10mm ammo out of a G29 still beats 40 S&W from a service sized gun.

Sort of.  More accurately, at these barrel lengths the longer barrel will allow the longer barrel to build more velocity/power.

Can't go wrong with either. If you're only going to buy ONE, go with the 20. The size difference in negligible. I have both and enjoy both. If you look at earlier posts when I first started this website, you will see that I was one of those "never Glock" guys. I stuck to the military training I received over the years, with safety being the most important aspect of firearms I purchased. I was a huge EAA 10mm guy. But years of broken guns, jams and stovepipes forced me to look elsewhere. I now own/carry Glocks almost exclusively.

I am leaning toward the 20. Hopefully it will be one and done I dont need another addiction lol.

I watched a friend shoot an elk 3 times in the head, he had hit it with his 69 chevelle and broke its legs.
It did not go down. The warden, who was called in finished it with her 12 gauge. He was allowed to keep the animal. 3 bullets from his compact Glock .40(dont know what model sorry) were lodged between hide and skull only slightly deformed. Never a fan of the .40 since then. Years later I realized it was the short bbl/wrong ammo that was the issue. I still do not own any .40S&W's.
The Chevelle was saved, but required a frame off to put it back to its original glory.

That's the thing about the 10mm it is addictive...Sorry it is what it is! ;D
Either of the Glocks 20 or 29 should serve you needs with the edge going to the 20 with a longer barrel and sight radius.  But don't underestimate that shorter G-29, it handles quite well in the trained hands. 8)

Yes. I Had heard about for years, but did not think I needed another caliber(and all the stuff that goes with it) Then my wife bought me the Delta Elite last year for Christmas, I am hooked. Given my affinity    for 1911's this caliber is perfect. I want the Glock for a low maintenance, dont care if it gets a little beat up alternative. Tough and reliable(and powerful in 10mm).

First off, a little advice... Don't buy a Glock, if you do you'll get used to a gun that shoots everything you put through it every time you pull the trigger accurately. U will get spoiled and other guns will not gleam as brightly as they did before..just joshing, let the arrows fly..... You will learn that they have several different calibers and most of them are fun.. If you're getting the 10mm the Glock model 40 is a hoot, I love mine...I think a 29 is next for me

I'm going to say go for it! I just ordered a 29 myself. I bleed Tennifer lol, I've had a pile of Glocks.

If it's not going to be an EDC I'd say get the 20. Maybe find someone who has one at the range and try it. I shoot a G30 better than I can a G21. Why? I have no idea.  With a 30 I can shoot ragged holes at 7 and 10 yards (that's where I practice for SD) but not a 21.

Glocks are great my friend, don't fear the.... Perfection :-D

Darn it, why did I have to look up a 40. That complicates things now lol.

The Glock 20 is a good balance in size for the 10mm cartridge. I own two...a Gen 3 SF model and a Gen 4.

Can't go wrong with a G20.

I went all-in on the 10mm thing last year.  Started with a used G20, then found MechTech and picked up an upper (which by the way is easily the most fun gun I've ever shot, and I've shot plenty), and while shopping for a dedicated lower for the carbine they went and released the G40  :o

So, you know, now I have all three.  I leave one of the lowers on the MechTech, and swap the G20 and G40 slide on the other lower. I shot a G29 at a local range, but really didn't enjoy shooting it, and I can't imagine carrying something so thick concealed would be at all comfortable for me; so I don't feel compelled to complete the set anytime soon... eventually, maybe.

Best of luck with your search - oh, and keep an eye out for used police and fire G20s... Mine was originally owned by a fire marshal, and it came to me inexpensive and well taken care of.

I have never shot the G29, so I can't comment on that gun, but I do have a G20.

One nice thing about the full size G20 is that you can buy a longer slide and conversion barrels from Lone Wolf.

The deer deserved to get shot for damaging a Chevelle. I wanted a 64, 65, 68 or 69 Chevelle when I was in High School. Never found one with a straight body that I could afford. I didn't care about anything else: I just coudn't do body work.

G40 & G29 here.  Probably get a G20 with a GSSF coupon next year........

I shoot the g40 better in GSSF comp than my 17 or 22.

Go figure

No offense meant to anyone. I just don't get all the complaining about "carrying something so thick concealed". I sometimes carry my Ruger P93 IWB and I forget I have it on. The big Glocks are nothing to carry concealed, and then the 26/27/33/39 just disappear. Some people must just have sensitive skin. I'm a skinny dude, and it just isn't a problem. Those guys who have a dicky-do-belly should have no trouble at all.

Anyway, my whole point of this is, stop saying stuff like that on posts where people are new to buying Glocks. Stop discouraging them from trying for themselves, because they may be like myself (and there is plenty more like me), who just aren't sensitive. I've carried a Glock 30 at work, iwb, on 12 hour shifts. Running fork lifts, sitting, standing, walking, and driving 49 miles each way. Stop being so sensitive guys, we don't carry firearms to be dainty. A good holster is everything. Don't spend $500+ on a gun and then buy a cheap holster at Wal-Mart. I carry in a Comp-Tac M-Tac and have kydex bodies for different guns. It cost me $80. I'm going to try Alien Gear and see how they compare. I will report back on my findings.

Sorry for the rant.

To the original poster, you can also go to Glocktalk.com forums, And get some good opinions without all the discouragement.

Tic-Glock - well, since you called me out with that partial quote...

So, the only stuff that should be posted in response to a request for advice on Glocks is the positive stuff? No caveats or bad experiences allowed? No alternatives or contrary opinions?

They may be like you - very true, and I think it's great that you can carry the large frame Glocks - but they may just as well be like me, and all we can do is express our own experiences and opinions. For me, that opinion and experience is that thin and light is just more comfortable to carry on a daily basis. Could I carry a G29 and make it work? Probably, but I can honestly say that I wouldn't like it, and if that was my only pistol option for carry (for instance, if I could only afford one such pistol), I'd be far more likely to just leave it behind than have it on me. I carried a Ruger SR40c for several months, but even that for me was too heavy and printed too much for my personal situation.

I carry a Sig P938 in a Crossbreed on a solid gun belt, with an extra mag in my off-hand pocket. That's what works best for me to comfortably carry and confidently deep conceal every day.

"Stop being so sensitive guys" - All due respect, but how about accepting that your experience and opinion isn't any more valid than anybody else's, and drop the elitist and dismissive attitude. All anybody can do is take in as much information as possible and find the best compromise for themselves. More often than not it's the critical assessments that are most valuable; positive "reviews" are a dime a dozen in the gun industry.

I really like all the view points. I live in rural OK, open is legal everywhere around here. Printing is not an issue, comfort can be. I am getting older and sitting for long periods is uncomfortable with or without a hand cannon IWB or OWB. good holsters and belts do make a huge difference. I carry a Kimber ultra in .45acp. When deep concealment is needed I throw my Mustang in my pocket. If I go into an unfamiliar or sketchy situation I would appreciate the extra firepower of 11(or more) rds of 10mm.
I cut timber around my property all the time, we have lions, and coyotes and bears(oh my lol). I really want a sort of bang around 10mm on my belt that I dont mind scratching and covering with saw dust.
The 20 seems perfect, more than likely if it's not on my belt it will be banging around in the console of my truck. The longer bbl and higher capacity will be more fun to target shoot with too. Currently that role is filled by a Colt 1991(.45acp). Used to camp in the CO rockies it was always on my side got cleaned at the end of the trip or as necessary. 2 things I never liked about it- it got heavy at times and one time I wiped out in a mud bog on my dirtbike. I was covered in black CO mud including the Colt. When I got back to camp and started getting out of my gear I thought- I wonder if this thing will fire? I checked the muzzle for obstruction and got off 2 rounds before it jammed tried to clear it but could not even get it back into battery. My buddy laughed and said I needed a Glock.

I think you'll love the G20, Shotgun.  In the field, hunting, working on friends' farms, etc. where I don't have to conceal, that's what I have on me OTW.  And, yeah, really hard to beat the full size 10mm at the range.

I never said my opinion was any more valid than yours. All I'm saying is most of the time all you see is "no no, you don't want a 29/30 for a ccw, they are like carrying a brick in your pants. Get a 26 or better a 27,the 40 has just as much power and the 26/27 is so small it will fit in your @$$ Crack.

Went to a pawn/gun shop today, they had a new 20 (650otd) a bit more than I wanted to spend, but felt great. They also had a 27, guy said it was same size as a 29(I thought the 29 was a little bigger), I did not like it near as well. What is SF? Guy said if I was gonna carry the 20, I might should look into one.  GS coming up in a few weeks, hopefully pick up a nice used 20 or find a dealer that wants to negotiate a little. I might not wait, the pawn star said he takes trades and I have a few things just taking up space in the safe.

The 29&30 is bigger than the 26/27/33/39,but length & height smaller than the 19/23/32/38. The 20/21/29/30/37/38/39 have a wider slide than the others.

SF= Slim Frame or Short Frame and is offered on the 20/21/29/30. It means the distance from the front of the grip to the back strap is smaller. It allows some folks to get a better hold on the large frame Glocks. If you have big hands, you may not need it. I don't "need" one, as I have slim, long fingers, but I prefer the feel of the SF. You need to try them side by side to find what you like best, in other words, what feels natural to you.

$650 sounds to be on the high side. Was it a Gen 3 or Gen 4 though? Gen 3's should go for $510 - $535, and Gen 4's should go for $540-$575. This has been MY experience, may vary by area. My 29SF was $550 OTD with NC's high tax rate (7.5%).

Hope this helps :-)

9.6% here(yikes). Sad story about shipping costs and 10mm being hard to get. Now I want to check out SF and an actual 29. I liked the bulky feel of that gen4(I like my Desert Eagle too lol), but I might like the slim even better. I was hoping to find one around 5-550, OK does not require transfer tax/paperwork on private sales which saves 10-15 bucks. But finding a used 10mm seems a challenge. guess nobody wants to part with em. Thank you for all the information everyone- the quest goes on.

As far as I know, all the barrels are drop in. I know the LoneWolf's are. I want a 6" for my 29.
