Title: 10mm and shoulder shots on deer
Post by: BKS on November 20 2016 01:15:38 PM MST
I am hunting near a pine plantation and it is THICK. Is there a 10mm hunting load that I can shoot der in the shoulder with and have good results in breaking them down?

Anybody have any firsthand knowledge and/or results they can share? The shots is have set up if it all comes together are 30yards or less

In my opinion: Heavy bullets will work better. If your State requires hollow-points or soft-points then you are stuck with those. If not then you can also use solids.

I rifle hunted in heavy brush with a 44, and I only used heavy bullets ~300 grains. I never had problems with tree branches deflecting the bullet. I would guess that 10mm would behave similar.

You can try Underwood 180 and 200 grain hollow-points. I have no personal experience with them.

Agree... light brush deflect the heavy bullets less... heavy cast as long as they fit the barrel properly and don't tumble (meaning usu oversized as per stock barrel to stabilize )

If you do your part; the following will work like a charm:
Underwood:
200gr XTP - personally killed a 300lbs wild boar at range referenced in OP...bang, flop.
180gr XTP
180gr Gold Dot

Buffalo Bore:
155gr TAC-XP (Razor Dobbs - Lookup YouTube videos showing him harvesting a big racked whitetail & bull elk.

Federal
180gr -Trophy Bonded Bear Claw

There are certainly others but I wouldn't hesitate to go after a whitetail with any of these 5.
I am interested in the actual terminal ballistics in game of the Lehigh xtreme defender projectile.  Maybe someday I'll test it.

Happy Hunting!

I don't think I would ever take a shoulder shot on a Deer with a 10mm Handgun ::) and why would you anyway? If you can see the shoulder of the Deer you should be able to go back 6" or so and tuck one in behind that shoulder blabe were the lungs are, you will have much better results. I have just seen way to many Deer hit in the shoulder with Slug guns and people using  light Cal Rifles run off on 3 legs and never recoverd. I think a 10mm Handgun would have the same results. I live in WI were our Deer are on the Large size and I am using my 10mm for Deer Hunting this year, and I would never even think of taking that kind of shot.

I appreciate the replies. The shot will be in the clear but if they run and get back into that it will be a hands and knees kinda track.   I was looking to anchor them on the spot or ensure a blood trail RayCharles could follow.

Maybe Im just a lil apprehensive, I killed a small doe the other day and got lucky the 2nd shot broke her back as she was running. (Pass thru) The first didn't. Entered at rear of rib cage and stopped under the shoulder on the off side, 40yards
I was shooting HPR 180 XTP out of a G40mos

14 GT500 I hunt in South Arkansas a large buck seldom tops 200 live weight.

BKS,
Sounds like a quartering away shot.  That can be a trickery shot even with rifle and scope.  I've seen more deer lost by rifled hunters attempting that shot than any other.  One person's opinion but I personally avoid that shot when hunting with pistol.  Can certainly be done but's harder to pull off.

Based on my results, I'm not sure I'd trust an XTP to penetrate reliably through both shoulders.  I would definitely switch to a cast bullet if I were to attempt that.

I love the 10mm but it has its limits.  If I were hunting in your situation, it would not be my gun of choice.  I'd trust my 44Mag or my 45-70 BFR to get that job done.

Respectfully, if you are concerned about the animal getting away, why not try to practice follow-up shots instead? Break the shot and recover to break another as soon as the sights are sharp on target. This is not an issue with the equipment. This is an issue with the shooter's confidence in himself.

Practice with the equipment until it becomes intimately familiar. I once had a .300WM I was afraid of. 60 rounds later in realistic practice and nothing had a great chance at getting away and it was an automated response to shoulder, sight and squeeze.

Load up some practice rounds to the same specs as the hunting round and shoot paper plates from various distances. Make a game of how rapidly you can deliver a follow-up shot. It's a semiautomatic pistol or a revolver. There is no rule against shooting twice. Invest in practice not a different bullet that you will shoot less of.

The first deer I killef with it, I did exactly that. Shot her quartering away and as she came down from the mule kick she did and started to run, I shot her again breaking her back.

I killed this one couple years back with my hand loaded 175g Silvertip at almost 1400 fps. Thru and thru bullet took out spine, went thru one shoulder blade and exited at shoulder on off side.

Well, to clarify on my original post, it was based on actual experience.  This year I put 2 shots into a buck through the shoulders at about 15 yards with 180gr XTP.  Both bullets were recovered exiting the far side shoulder.  One was nicely mushroomed, the other was just the jacket and totally mangled.  Damage to the far side shoulder wasn't more than the hole for the bullets, they had shed all their energy.  I forget the FPS these were stiff loads, but I don't believe I've ever hit that in my Kimber with what I considered safe pressure.

Since neither exited, I considered it marginal performance.  It could have hit more bone and failed to break the far shoulder.  The deer still required a third shot to finish it.  The deer was down and I'd hunt like that again, I just don't consider it something I'd do if I required the deer to go down on the spot.

shot placement pistol or rifle.killed both . 175 .180 grain should work.

I haven't shot a deer with a 10mm, but I have shot many of them with a 45acp and 230 grain bullets with nearly identical sectional density.

The 45, with an XTP, will punch though both shoulders just fine... Even from a short barrel (850 fps).

I'd bet a week's pay the 10 with a 200 XTP will do the same, at least most of the time.

I have used hardcast, Hornady hap and xtp and Sierra. They all went through. I have used 165 through 200 grains.

10mm will blast through both shoulders of a deer at 50 yards with a 200 grain XTP all day.

If they don't drop right there, they usually plow shoulders down for about 20 yards and done.

This is from a long slide G20 with hand loads at 1200fps.

Heavier bullets tend to fare better in the "deep woods". At close range, lighter bullets may work but penetration is what will arrange for the projectile to reach the vitals.
