Title: Sights for long distance...
Post by: gehlsurf on November 06 2016 07:24:54 PM MST
Hi guys,

I have a RIA 10mm in Commander size, been reloading for the first time, and love this thing!!!  That said, while I do like the adjustable stock sights.... do any of you have any suggestions on better sights for longer distances?  At the range, the family and I usually start with handgun, then onto rifle (where my M1a, Sig MCX and Winny 70 .223 varmint barrel RULE the bunch out of my other family members... but enough with bragging...).  But eventually I'd like to get my lil 10mm on paper at 50 yds, and shooting my M1A iron sights got me thinking..... my sights on my RIA would be about the same size as the target downrange, if not bigger..... very hard to hit in that scenario....

Sooooo...... what do long distance guys do on semi-autos?  besides slap on a rail and scope-like the wheel gunners?  File down a true iron sight-ditching the fiber optic?  Honestly, no matter how bad or ridiculous it sounds, I'm up for ANY suggestions, I love long distance shooting, and have done some pretty weird stuff (or so I thought, until I found others doing it) to tighten up my groups, but if it works... it works!!!

And yes, more practice, I won't take offense to that statement....   >:( ;D

I just hold 6" high at 100 yards.  I can hit milk jugs pretty consistently standing two hands at that range...say 50% hit rate.  Give me a bag and I rarely miss.  This is with my Witness Elite Match.  Basically I aim at the red or blue lid, and tend to get center hits pretty consistently off a rest.

Thanks!! And I think I found my problem.... total duh!!! Moment!!  Like I've said before, I'm more of a shotty guy and  rifle guy, lol.

I have my pistol front sight set so to fully cover what I'm aiming for/target... the only other pistol I have is a SIG  P238, and I shoot great with it like this-because it has no elecation, so I'm stuck to shoot like that.  On my RIA, I'm gonna set the rear, so that the POI is more like just shy top of my front sight, more than exactly where my front sight is, which leads my front sight to cover my POI....  this is how my rifles are set, and I hit dead on like this

long explanation for basically a noob mistake, haha

What your referring to is what sight hold do we prefer.  In bullseye shooting, think of the bullseye as a clock face.  What everyone did, and what I was taught, was to hold your sights on the bottom of the bullseye or, use a 6 o'clock hold and the bullets would impact, theoretically, in the X ring.  Over the years different shooters started experimenting with using a 12 o'clock hold, aiming at the top of the bullseye, and what's referred to as a dead center hold or, splitting the bullseye with your front sight.

I don't really think their's a wrong answer here.  As long as you have your gun properly zeroed, and are capable in your sight picture, the bullets are all going to the same X ring.

Now, sight width.  That's another story.  As I've gotten older, my eyes just can't focus on the sights as well as they could 30 years ago. I find I like a bit narrower front sight, with a bit more light on either side of it.
For me, I still use a 6 o'clock hold but I prefer a Dawson .100 wide front sight with his .040 fiber optic insert.  With a .125 wide rear notch, I find I can see them a whole lot better for 50-100 yard shooting.

Yeah, Jeff, haha, that's exactly how my rifles are set up, 6 o'clock hold, I like to see my target,  so I don't "float" off target.  I agree with a smaller front post,  unfortunately my RIA has a weird dovetail dimension, so still searching. ...   thanks,  Jeff
