Title: UW 200gr XTP
Post by: mt10mm on October 29 2016 06:43:54 AM MDT
I have sold my G20 and have now gone to my G29 for edc and woods carry. What are your thought on th 200gr XTP from the factory length g29 barrel? Will they perform as needed as g29 short barrel velocity?

They might. From what I have read and watched on youtube they don't expand as well from the shorter barrel so they should penetrate deeper. Now we need someone to confirm. :)

Should be fine.  You will still have the velocity of a 180 grain 40S&W from a full size gun.

I going to email Hornady and see what they saw.

The Underwood 200gr XTP is what I use in my 10mm handguns. I chronographed them (and a couple more) from my  Glock 29 with a standard barrel and standard recoil spring rate.

Underwood ammo:

180gr XTP : 1263, 1266, 1255, 1253, 1299 : avg 1267 ft/s  640 ft-lb
200gr XTP : 1133, 1120, 1141, 1153, 1170 : avg 1143 ft/s  579 ft-lb
220gr HC  : 1075, 1082, 1084, 1104, 1094 : avg 1088 ft/s  577 ft-lb

MT10mm,
I think you're definitely good to go with the UW 200gr XTP out for your G29.  Possibly even an ideal combination.
Think we can nail this one down pretty definitively.
Using the chronographed velocities harrygunner shared & the work done by raggedyman we can see exactly what will happen.
raggedyman tests pf 200gr XTP at various fps....

You'll get good performance (expansion & penetration) out of the 200gr XTP down to about 1050 fps...
Expect you'd get between 15" to 20" of penetration in gel & 579 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle.  That's a party I'd like to avoid.
Unless of course you expect to bump into a big Brown Bear but we've covered that thread several times.
Regards.

Agreed. For personal defense against 2 legged critters, I'd drop down to the 180 gain XTP or even better the 180 grain Gold Dot by Underwood or roll your own with some pulled 180 grain HSTs.

It's what I carry in my G29.  :D

I would LOVE to see a gel test with 180gr HST  at full tilt!

I'm also leaning towards the 200gr XTP from Underwood for my Glock 29.

It's a good choice. Heavy bullets loses less velocity from a short barrel so  a 200 grain slug with a power of full house 10mm means real bad news for the baddies.  8)

Underwood is OOS on the 200 XTP. Would I be served just as well with the 200 Nosler? It is the load I was going to buy from DT before I found out my old buddy Mike McNett has become a cheat and a liar.

I've always carried Gold Dots, and in tnoutdoors9's video, from the G20,  UW's 180 Gold Dot nearly tore itself apart. That's the main reason I'm looking at 200 grain rounds. I'm going to contact ATK and ask why they don't make a 200 grain Gold Dot & HST for the 10mm crowd.

I'm not familiar with Nosler but I haven't heard any bad about Underwood ammo so I think you're good to go.

A 200 grain slug at 1143 fps, I'm not volunteering to take one in the chest! Plus that's faster than a .40 can push a 180 from a G22.

For sure. Even the Uw 10mm 180 will be just as bad to them. I would go no lower than 180.

I'd just like to add, I ran the numbers in a free recoil calculator. The 200gr XTP has less recoil than the 180's.

But the 200 is like getting hit by a Ferrari Bus lol

Undewood 200gr XTP & Nosler good to go....

Nothing in the world wrong with Underwood 180gr either (even out of full sized pistol)....
I've watched every test on the interweb with UW 180gr gold dot and tested it myself....  Close though it may have appeared (out of full sized pistol into bare gel) in TN's video, you won't find a single test where it actually fails.  Add to that the barrel length in G29 as well as rumor Underwood has of late backing off the velocities a little. Wouldn't hesitate for a second to carry it.

Nothing wrong with their 180s and even thought they dropped from 1350 to 1300 fps the recoil is very stout. Shooting the 200 is lot easier with 1250 fps.

They have the Delta Elite 180 that's 1240 fps so they would be easier to shoot too.

I wonder why they chose the Nosler for the Delta Elite load?

No idea but they're supposed to be good stuff like the GD and the XTP.
