Was looking for heavy 10mm rounds with Nosler bullets, so I gave Double Tap another try. I had hoped competition had them returning to the performance levels they had a decade ago.
The label on the box of 200gr JHP specified 1250 ft/s from a 5" barrel and 1195 ft/s from a 3.8" barrel.
I chronographed this ammo with my 4.25" Commander length 1911 in 10mm.
The measurements were:
1095 1110 1097 1089 1092 : ave 1097 ft/s, 534 ft-lb
This gun, with a Bar-Sto ramped barrel, averages 40 ft/s faster for 200gr ammo compared to my Glock 29.
For comparison, in a previous session, Underwood 200gr XTP averaged 1183 ft/s 620 ft-lb from the same gun. And on this trip, I measured Underwood 180gr Gold Dot rounds and averaged 1289 ft/s 663 ft-lb with the same 4.25" 1911.
These Double Tap did not meet my expectations based on how the boxes are labeled.
BTW, I had never bothered to measure Georgia Arms "Canned Heat" 180gr 10mm FMJ I use at the range. They averaged 1085 ft/s 470 ft-lb from the 4.25" barrel. That's close to the 1100 ft/s specified on the cans' labels.
That sounds about on par for what I got in the 4.75" barrel. They seemed to do really well at that speed and might come apart badly when driven real hard.
Still not a bad personal defense load for the street.
For the back country I would want something else.
After a decade of avoiding them, I bought three boxes. Won't buy any more from DT. Their marketing is too much like Mercedes replacing cars with Yugo while leaving their luxury ads in place.
