Howdy
I intend to purchase a 10mm primary for taking hog and as a defensive sidearm when walking with my bolt guns.
It seems most people are using 6" barrels; some with, some without brakes, but I haven't found any data as to their efficacy within any given parameters.
I originally sought a 6" barrel w/ brake shooting full power loads and I've set my eye on a few different firearms. One most certainly has brakes on the market, the other two would probably require gun-smithing, of which, one would seem to lend itself more readily; if I had by druthers, I'd opt for 1 of the latter, so adding a brake becomes a bit of a chore.
There are other options: 5" with bushing-brake for example, but I'm almost certain the loss in velocity would by far negate the benefits of a brake, plus I'm skeptical about their functionality.
As such, I must determine if there is truly a need..
Would a brake be of use when shooting low powered factory ammo? @ 5"? @6"?
If not, at what point through full-powered into hot loads would they offer their benefits? @ 5"? @6"?
Are there any negative sides to putting a break on a pistol?
What kind of optics are y'all using?
Honestly right now, I'm leaning toward just going 6" w/o a brake
The negative is weight. On a rifle the few added ounces aren't a big deal against a 7+ lb gun. Same goes for a race gun that is carried in a case. But for a gun that I would be packing around all day in the hills, I would save the weight.
I would go 6" no break. If you gotta have some gas powered compensation, look for a Glock 20C.
Scrypt, Welcome to the forum! Many of the 10mm firearms with good ammunition can be effective beyond 100 yards. I used to be able to consistently hit a 4" target at 130 yards with my S&W 1006 5" with the adjustable sights. I was younger had eyes like an egale and much stronger back then.
Well that pretty much locks it in :D
6", no break, iron sights
All of my pistol training is tactical .45acp 50yard and in, so I guess I'm gonna have to start marksmanship training off the bench
130 is incredible, what shooting position?!
Besides Buffalo Bore, who offers standard power loads?
Never mind about the ammo, found the thread I was lookin for!
I never have luck with forum searching, but google pulled it up
