I think I'm INFO OVERLOADED Again...
I need to know what is good for a heavy solid white tail for the 10mm. I go for heart lung shots mostly, I admit I'm not up on what bullet does best for what game your after, so figured I'd ask here.
If one can suggest a good bullet for black bear and white tail also, I like to keep to one round to keep the re zeroing to a minimum.
I plan to use my new Glock 40 this year for carrying during deer season. Also got a bear tag so will also will need a load capable of downing one of those also. So that's why a cartridge with a proper bullet type for would be good.
Currently all I got was what the local gun shops have. PMC 200 grain FMJ FP. These good for any thing besides paper punching? I got them also to get use to the new gun.
No Browns or Grizzlies here.
I carry the 200 gr Xtp bullet for the woods.
Seems not to over expand like some and has ok penitration for game.
YMMV on the powder you put behind it, tho there are a few deluxe companies that sell same f you don't reload.
180-200gr XTP over stiff charges of your favorite powder (ie, AA9, LS, BD, 800X, etc) ....
200gr Beartooth WFNGC bullet over your favorite charge of (above)
Doubletap sells their version of Beartooth's bullet at a fraction of the cost (and wait time, usually) ... and its decently good.... they sell it in 200 and 215gr weights i think...
I'd honestly go with the 200gr BTB listed above if you can get them in time for season, otherwise, I'd get DT's verison and play around until you find a really accurate velocity between 1150 and 1350fps and stick with the single most accurate load you come up with ... and you will be VERY happy with its performance!
I'm with the other guys. 200 grain XTPs are what I handload and I have also handloaded the DT 200 WFNGCs, Beartooth 200 grain WFNGCs and I'm currently experimenting with Montana Bullet Works 190 grain FN-PB 38-40 bullets and I just bought some Straight Shooters 200 grain WFN bullets.
I've weighed samples of each of the cast lead bullets by all four of the above mentioned manufacturers and Beartooth's are the most consistent in weight. I still haven't found a super accurate load for any of the hardcast lead bullets just yet so can't help you there.
In terms of performance on game, nicke10mm has shot several deer with the XTPs and his posts will show you how the 200 XTP performed. If you want penetration more than expansion, then hardcast lead with a wide meplat is what will work best. Good luck!
Good info here. For an off the shelf bullet I would look to the XTP as well. I would also think the Barnes 155 grain would work if you wanted or needed a lead free option.
Personally, I would cast my own and go with a 180 grain cast HP for white tail. But, I don't hunt.

Call that said, devastation from a HC WFNGC bullet will EASILY surpass anything in XTP could ever
dream about doing. I know firsthand. Last three deer I've killed have been with 10mm 200gr XTP's loaded hot. But I've seen what the Beartooth style bullet does..... ain't no comparison. ;-)
If you don't roll you own ammo; be sure to check out Buffalo Bore, Double Tap and Underwood Ammo. They have some descent loads that may fit within your needs.
I used the Underwood 180gr XTP round for hunting this last Fall. It perform flawlessly on the doe I shot from 30 yards away.

I'll be using a Glock 40 10mm, but for lead or hardcast I got a wolf 6.02" barrel also, not the uber lookticool but it seems a nice simple SS one.
I even got the threaded version of it and a Comp... couldn't resist. Logic said "GET AMMO INSTEAD!" eh...had the money now so got it, as Lone Wolf barrels like these are being phased out.

WFN cast from that model 40 will be devastating if the bullet is put into the boiler room. That is exactly what I shoot in my Glock 40 MOS and load for my 10mm. I also shoot the LW barrel it is accurate. Buffalo Bore should fix you up but do yourself a favor study up on reloading and you will really enjoy the 10 MM expereince.

Not always and at some point you hit the point of diminishing returns. Weight vs velocity and visa versa. I think the 200 from 6" barrel is very efficient. As you test different loads the accuracy will take you down the path you need to go. Brush busting is a term used often but rarely a practical application of ballistics. Why? most folks wait and look for that perfect shot on a whitetailed deer. Most hunters will not risk loosing or wounding an animal by taking a marginal shot. In fact I have found using a handgun makes me more picky than ever about the right shot and placement of that shot. Also any of the 180-220 grain from the Model 40 will get the job done.
Just a comment, I just received my BTB 200gr WFNGCs I ordered in January... The 200gr WFNGC from DT were here in a week...
I stand by BTB, but order waayyyyyy early...
A word of advice on comps and handgun hunting. A very harsh muzzle blast can and will knock a surprised whitetail off their feet with a miss. Kind of annoying when you miss and the game goes down and then pops right back up as you approach, usually in a spot where you can't make a follow-up. Also invest in electronic ear protection and lots of batteries. If you hunt with others consider keeping your gun holstered around them so as not to damage their hearing. All these thing did I learn hunting with my .460. I tend to hunt with earmuffs anymore.
I used 180XTPs last year on deer and it worked great. I'm going to try 180 Gold Dots this year. My general woods bumming load is my homecast, powdercoated 180s at 1250 fps or so.
