just received an order of sig sauer 10mm 180 gr. V-crown ammo.
not happy.
one the rounds I examined was as short as 1.194", the hornady book lists the c.o.l. as 1.260" max.
i'm betting this is close to a compressed load. the difference in length here just jumps out at you.
there is no evidence of any sort of a crimp on this batch (120 rnds.)
also the skiving is absent at the nose of the bullet. this newer batch has the silver primer.
by contrast, my previous ammo from them had a distinct taper crimp, noticeable skiving on the bullet and a brass colored primer (not that this makes any difference, just pointing it out).
I have contacted the factory about this and hope to get an answer.
don't want to bash sig sauer but to me there is a big drop in quality since i first started using their fmj and h/p ammo.
any thoughts, comments?
thanks.
Hello chaindrive, it is possible for sever factors to cause the issue scene, bullet actually seated too deep which can be caused by foreign matter or debris stuck on the bullet or inside the seater stem. If the bullet is smaller it can be a loose fit or if the casing is larger the fit can be loose, if the bullet in this condition is bumped or dropped it could be driven deeper.
How many did you find that were out of spec. ?
hello shadow,
I found 2 that I consider out of spec.
one at 1.194", the other at 1.229".
the rest ran around 1.50" to 1.53".
the people at sig want me to send pictures (which i'm not set up to do).
I don't understand why they won't let me send the actual bullets back to them, i'm sure UPS or FED-EX would do it.
I wasn't able to actually talk to anyone in the ammunition manufacturing dept.
anyway, I think i'll pull the bullets out to spec length and taper crimp them lightly and call it good.
in the meanwhile, I hope federal will start making HST 10mm ammo...
I hope you mean 1.2500" top 1.2530", With everyone having camera phones you should have someone who can take a picture for you. You could pull them and measure powder, take measurements inside case mouth and bullet diameters etc.
If you want to send them to me after all is said and done, I could document what I find inside and out and let everyone see what was found. Pull-Documentations are what I do so everyone can learn. :D
yikes! ::)
I did mean 1.250" and 1.253".
I just weighed them, the recessed cartridge and the in spec one are the same at 265 gr.
so at least I know they do have a powder charge.
I think you already did a pull doc on this newer sig round, but thanks for the kind offer.
by the way, was there any kind of crimp on that round?
Of the three I measured Diameters 0.4205" on the edge which is a fair amount of crimp.
Even 0.4225" would be a good crimp, but case neck tension is what really determines what holds the bullets firmly.
o.k., what I ended up doing was to use my kinetic puller to move the bullets where they needed to be (and it seemed like they slid out way too easy, just a few light taps) and then gave them a light taper crimp.
all's well.
maybe it's just me, but this shouldn't be necessary on premium ammunition.
thanks for your interest shadow. :D
I have a half a dozen boxes, I suppose I need to go check them all now.
PC,
I noticed the difference in the newer run with the silver primers.
no complaints with the older version having the brass colored primers.
i'm sure the newer ones will be fine, i'm just too critical...
at any rate, my new carry ammo will be federal trophy bonded JSP 180 gr.
it's even a little hotter.
The newer stuff I have used has been very inconsistent. So much so I don't use it anymore. Seems the older stuff was better.
The boxes I bought they left the cases bell mouthed.........I just run them through me Lee FCD, but still.
