Title: using 155g bullets
Post by: gadabout on September 01 2016 01:19:04 PM MDT
I have created a very nice load for 40 cal that is 155g bullet with 6.3 power pistol and I am trying to justify buying a larger quantity by loading some for 10mm. What do you all think?  :o Craig

Just to make sure I understand the question...

You are loading 40 S&W 155 gr over 6.3 grains of Power Pistol.  You are wondering about using 155 grain in 10mm...with the same load?

So, here are my thoughts.

1.  6.3 grains of Power Pistol is an extremely light load even for 40 S&W. Max is 9 grains.  A 20% reduction is still 7.2 grains.  That should be a very soft shooting load.

2.  155 grain bullets run great in 10mm.  One of the big strengths of 10mm is it can do anything a 40 S&W can do, but a lot more too.  Lots of guys here run 155 grain lead and FMJ bullets for practice and more than a couple like the 155 grain JHP for defense.

3.  As far as a 6.3 grain load of Power Pistol in 10mm.  That starts to concern me.  A double charge becomes a real possibility with a load that light.  And, a squib that doesn't leave the barrel becomes a corresponding concern.  If you want economy, look to a faster powder.  If you want the lighter load, stick with 40 S&W.

I thought it might take more powder to run it good in 10mm but I have been doing a lot of light loads for a friend and I shot 155g at 6.3 in 40 cal and really liked it is all. I would consider doing like 6.5 or 6.7 like that. I have better 10mm guns now than the 40 I got for testing but like the 40. Just trying to justify the quantity of 155g and sounds like I could workup a nice round.  Thanks for the input.   Craig

6.3 seems very light, have you chrono'd the load?

Not in 40 years or so and please try to remember I am looking for as light as possible a load that will still work the action and is accurate.  Craig

Guess I should say I was looking for a light load for a friends 40 but after shooting the lighter rounds I think I would like a lighter round in 10mm. Oh yeah just ordered 1000 155g so I had better like it huh?.  Craig
