Title: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?
Post by: Sonny10MM on August 28 2016 09:45:09 AM MDT
Haven't heard anything since the 10MM Magazines were being held up. Anyone know of any updates? Thanks.

I have searched a bit on this, from the looks of it, they are working on becoming Bren Ten #2. Supposedly great gun with no mags.

That said I don't bother to try to contact eagle or grand power any more since they never can get their story straight from any angle.

Maybe someone on here has been in contact with Hennessy recently and can shed some additional light on this subject.

It might be out of the running before really getting started!

The magazine issue is nuts and they run 2X the cost of other platforms. Another big question is the street price when another batch hits the market. If they show up > $700, that will be another strike against them versus other platforms. It's really looking like that's the most sound option now... another platform!

Eagle said on FB today they're shipping 10's for purchase and have magazines.

Henning mentioned a LS. He's checking to see what's available now.

Intercooler, please keep us updated. If a 5" is available I would rather have that than the 4.25".

No 5" yet I was told. The 4.25" is available with decocker now through Henning for $699.00 plus shipping to the FFL.

I am pretty sure Henning told me $679 including shipping. I think I am going to wait a couple of days to see if they show up at some other dealers. I would think Henning would try to contact me. I gave him my credit card info and dealer's FFL back in January.

The GP's have some neat features like the decocker (now), rotating barrel and some really nice machining. That price tag of $699.00 really pushes the envelope on whether it's worth it considering the magazines are also 2X the cost of similar pistols. You can get a Glock 20/29 or Witness for $100-$200 less.

I'm on the list with Henning for a 5" Model. I guess they will be more than $699 though. :( Guess I'll see how my funds hold out if I get the call they are in. I do want to try one. Hope it's worth it.

And a couple hours later, after checking with Eagle Imports he has it. Getting the FFL and all that done, will likely have it next week. Comes with 2 mags for $699.

That's great news! I hope we can get more in people's hands for reports. We need a running video, some accuracy testing and pre/post brass measurements shooting powder puff all the way through Underwood loads.

Got my Email on it last night too. It's a 4.25" version :( and not the 5" I wanted. May not seem like much of a difference, but at $699 I'm going to wait for the one I want.

I don't think the Grand Power is a game changer of Glock proportions.  But it is interesting to note that the Glock was quite spendy when released at $400 as I recall.  Economies of scale have just about made it immune to market inflation as it is still about $400 30 years later.

Wish I could still buy diesel at 1984 prices.

So while I'm waiting for the GP 40 I was wondering. Has anyone found them to be better at NOT throwing brass too far?
Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?

The only member here with one said it throws brass a shorter distance. I hope eventually some end up in YouTube video makers hands so we can see!

I may take that challenge :)
Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?
Post by: Intercooler on September 05 2016 05:50:26 PM MDT
It's one of the weak points to most YouTube videos. They rarely do a pistol test the way some of us would! Run it with the weakest to strongest ammo, lightest to heaviest, biggest Meplat, steel cased, etc... then put some real numbers to brass distance, accuracy, etc...
Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?
Post by: PCFlorida on September 05 2016 06:01:06 PM MDT
10mm and weakest just don't seem to go together :)
Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?

True. In .22LR I found some ammos that wouldn't cycle the slide. Good for a revolver though!

Ok, so Henning emailed me today, they are shipping the gun to my dealer today and it will be there on Monday. Just when I am starting 2 weeks off of work! I should have a chance to do some shooting, I need to load some 200 grain XTP's up over the weekend, I have a ton of 180's with 8.8 grains of Power Pistol. I'm planning to work up a nice load with the 200's and Major Pistol. Fun times! I really need to get a chrono, I guess I should take a look at Amazon and Midway tonight.
Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?
Post by: Intercooler on September 08 2016 05:43:39 PM MDT
Outstanding!

Do you have any good factory ammo like Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Doubletap? Can you do some pre/post brass measurements with pictures? Also maybe a video or some measurements on brass distance? Thanks a bunch.
Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?
Post by: PCFlorida on September 08 2016 06:47:54 PM MDT
The only factory ammo that I have is the Sig JHP, other than that I have thousands of reloads, all in Starline. Mostly 180's, mostly 8.8 of PP. I'm thinking of picking up an inexpensive chrono for now over the weekend. Movies are certainly possible, we do have decent phones if nothing else.

Interesting news, let see how long they can keep a stream of them coming in. If they actually submitted the paperwork like they said they did all that time ago, we only have about 6 months to wait before the 5" should be cleared for import.

I can't shake a feeling they just stockpiled some mags to be able to make a reasonable sized shipment. Kinda concerned they might be in the same problematic circumstance in just a few days to weeks.

Those that get them, let us know how they shoot! ;D

Ok, so I just got home with the GP 40 and my Amazon delivery of a chronograph was waiting in the driveway. So here is a photograph of the GP 40 in the box, I need to strip it and clean it before I can shoot it. Very similar in size to a G20, weighs just a bit less. G20 1.718 and the GP 40 is 1.706, so not much difference. I just noticed the color in this picture is way off, I'll take some as I strip and clean it.

Ok, here is a comparison of the GP 40 barrel and the G20 barrel. I am extremely impressed with the barrel of the GP 40, I have to say it is the best chamber support I have seen yet in a 10mm. The G20 however is not too bad, they have gotten better over the years. This is about a 4-5 year old Gen3. I need to get a picture of the chamber support in my G29.

Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?
Post by: PCFlorida on September 12 2016 01:43:16 PM MDT
Two more points.

1. The finish on the barrel is unbelievably nice. It likely has to be for the barrel to rotate, but it is awesome. A lot of time went into the machine work.

2. I took it out in the front yard and put 10 rounds though it, 8.8 of PP with a 180 FMJFP. If the ground behind and about 6 feet to my right wasn't a concrete parking pad on a slope I imagine I would have been able to just scoop up the brass. As it was I had to pick it up, but without moving my feet .  This may be the 10mm reloaders dream gun.

One more thing while I am thinking about it.

Take down is a breeze. Pull the slide back (empty gun of course and no mag) with one hand while pulling down on the 'Glock style' tabs pull the slide back all the way and lift the back up.

To put it back together it takes quite a bit of work, perhaps it gets better with time. It is just the reverse of the above, but the recoil spring tends to get bunched up and in the way. It probably took me 10 tries. You also have to push the barrel up in the slide.

I have found that if you run the barrel all the way out and reassemble with the barrel hanging towards the floor, it's a lot easier. The only night sights, available, for the MK12 are the rear tritium sights. At this time they don't have a front sight for it. Eagle does offer red or green fiber optic front/rear for the MK12. It's great to see another GP out there. I really like this firearm and use it as my EDC.

So the MK7 was the older style with the trigger guard you pulled to do take down, and the MK12 is the newer one?

I found many of the points you stated the same in my 9mm K100 version. Great machining and high quality with the best support out there. So it tossed the brass less than 10'? Is yours a decocker?

It should be a matter of time until Dawson or one of the others sells a night front. I still prefer a Lasermax Micro green laser on the rail.

Yes, it is a decocker. I am going to set the chrono up tomorrow and will get some velocity readings. Will put some of the Sig 180 JHP through it as well. I am going to compare the G20 and the GP 40. I am guessing 10' or less, I will measure it tomorrow. It is much less than any of my other 10mm though. This is looking good so far.

Has anyone seen these for sale anywhere? Although I cancelled my order with Henning, I may still buy one if I can find it under $700 shipped. I'm still on the list for a 5" with Henning. Someone on this thread suggested the 5" Models should be available in the Fall. I hope so after passing on the 4.25" Model.  :-[

Range use or hunting, though I've never found a 5" too big in the right holster. Over that though (IMO) does get cumbersome.

Intercooler, Century has 15rd K100 mags listed at $17.87 each. I'm sure these are older mags that are left over from when they sold the K100 Mk7 pistols. Not sure if they have them in stock and I'm not sure but maybe you have to be a dealer to order from them?

I started working a ladder today with Lovex / Shooters World Heavy Pistol D037.2. It is for all I can tell identical to AA #9. Things were kind of boring until I got to 12.5 grains with a 200 Hornady XTP.

(http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z59/PCFlorida/gpload.jpg) (http://s188.photobucket.com/user/PCFlorida/media/gpload.jpg.html)

The GP-40 was very controllable and I am beginning to love the SA trigger. It has been a while since I shot a DA/SA and I forgot how nice it is. Nicer than the Glock when you are shooting SA. There was no case bulging and it still puts the brass in a nice neat pile for me. I did shoot one round though my G20 and it had a slight case bulge. I have the brass, I'll measure it if anyone is interested. This was all once or twice fired Starline, this batch only went through my Sig before today. I believe there is a lot to be said for the rotating barrel, it seems to be much more consistent for throwing the brass, and not nearly as far either.

Are those velocities out of the GP? Any brass measurements or video?

Yes, those are chrono readings out of the Grand Power. How should I measure the brass? I saved it just wasn't sure where to take the measurements. To be honest the brass looks really good.

I figured it would look really good. Here is where to measure:

Is that 1270 FPS with a 200gr bullet? That's 715 lbs at the muzzle. Really good!

Are you still running the stock "red" spring? I can give you measurements if you want to step to a 20lb or higher CZ-75 spring. That might reduce the throw even more!

Post by: Intercooler on September 17 2016 06:33:49 PM MDT
The stock CZ recoil spring measured ~ 4.865" and I had to whittle it down a coil or two at a time. When I could finally get the slide on it was about identical in length to the stock GP spring in length. The cut spring is 3.935" and the GP spring measures 3.900"

I figured that was where to measure so I took those already. On all 5 rounds it was .422 before and .424 - .425 after firing. The Glock was .428 after firing and clocked 1281.

That is 1270 FPS with a 200 gr Hornady XTP. I picked a thousand of them up on sale last month. I'm really happy with this gun. The felt recoil is much lower and there isn't as much muzzle flip.

Yes, still running everything stock until I shoot it some more. Right now I'm amazed. What is the stock spring, do you know?

According to the guys in Slovakia, it's comes stock with a 6.5kg spring which converts to 14.33#. Seems like there would be plenty of room for increasing spring weight.
Title: Re: Any recent update on the Grand Power in 10MM?
Post by: PCFlorida on September 17 2016 08:14:38 PM MDT
So I believe that what we know about recoil springs may not apply to the rotating barrel. A 14 lb spring isn't nearly enough in a short recoil design, but may be plenty in a rotating barrel. The gun doesn't recoil that hard at all. I will try to get some video but may need to wait a week. We will see.

I had to go down in my 9mm on the spring weight (hence the cut-down). The red spring seemed too strong IMO for even +P. I think I went with a 10lb spring which is what I run in my EAA Limited 9mm even with +P+. I'm pretty sure the red spring feels stronger than what whey rate it. You might be good to go across the board with it... however... swapping to a Wolff spring you will know exactly where you are at and what works.

I'm sure to swap it at some point, it is running really well right now with no defects out of the box. No FTF or FTE, it just runs. Like a Glock :)

The accuracy is great :)

I need to get a couple hundred of the 200 XTP's loaded up. I think I am staying right there at 12.5 . Very consistent.

I agree, I already like the GP 40 much more than my G20. If everything else was equal it handles the spent brass much better.

I'm sure as more get out videos will follow. I like the torture tests like MAC is currently running on pistols.  I think the GP wouldn't do real hot in those dirt tests with the rotating barrel. Hopefully someone goes over the decocker function. Having tried the Sig and CZ decockers, I wasn't a fan of either.

It is actually a decocker / safety. It decocks, but it stays in the decock position until pushed back up. In the decock position every shot is DA.

That's interesting looking...the switches look like prison cell door controls.

Some of the grip features may not be desirable, depending on how pronounced they are.  This would need to be an in hand fit testing to see how it feels! ::)

The grip on the P40 doesn't have the replaceable backstraps. That said, I and everyone who have held my P40 10mm have found it to be very comfortable. I did add the Tractiongrips to it. Without it the grip can be very slick.

As to the switches, the look like 2 position spring return. Very common in any industrial area.

So according to http://www.grandpower.eu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=177&start=10 the Centimeter engraving was custom for a European customer, it is a 5" GP 40, but with extended controls at the least I would guess. The grip is the same, extremely comfortable.

Still running the red spring. The only issues I have had were some FTF, early on, with some PPU which I believe were under powered and FTF, last range trip, with some Sellor & Bellot which I think was related to a dirty gun. Strangely enough, on the last range trip the PPU ran flawlessly. I think these rounds are from a different, more powerful lot. Other than that the gun has run great.

I'm interested in purchasing the P40L in 10mm so decided to contact Eagle.

Just read their reply dated 11-7 which states "we do know that the GP40L is not coming into the USA at this time".

Well obviously that could change tomorrow, besides I'd imagine Eagle don't want to stunt P40 sales by announcing the P40L until they are stocked locked n ready to rock. So I just wrote david.copping@grandpower.eu (Dave), asking him to reply here on this post with any information that he may have. Incase anyone was wondering I included this link.

The reason I did this and have reason to believe he "may" respond here, is Jesse Adkins commented on one of the youtube vids that Dave made about the P40, inviting him to comment here, and Dave actually asked for the link. But sadly I think that was missed...

Anyway that was two years ago, perhaps he will drop by and enlighten us about the status of the P40L in 10MM. If not, we all have his email :P

read the last few comments at the bottom of this vid to see Dave actually asked for a link but wasn't given one. :(

The ideal version I would want is a 6", double stack. Unsure why they don't make one. May not be a market for it there, or it may be too far from the sweet spot in which a rotating barrel operates reliably? or off in the future?

At any rate I can settle for a 5", double stack, that doesn't throw brass twenty feet away, for now. In the not too distant future, er I Hope!

A 4.25", single stack, not so much. So the waiting game continues.

It was shipped "2nd Day Air" UPS but for some reason it was delivered overnight. BTW, Centerfire guns is in Colorado but the gun was shipped from a distributor in Louisiana. That seems to be the norm anymore.
Going to the range tomorrow! BTW, Centerfire still shows them in stock.

I truthfully have had not a single malfunction since I purchased it a couple months ago. I have about 2K through it so far. It is a very unique action and it certainly reduces recoil more than my Glocks or 1911's or even my Sig.

OK, the first range trip wasn't so great. Due to limited time and having a couple of other guns I wanted to shoot, I only put 50 rounds through the P40. I had 4 mags (I had bought 2 a few months ago in anticipation of buying the gun) and with every mag it failed to fully chamber the last round in the mag. It only took a light tap on the back of the slide to chamber the round. Other than that I liked it. The trigger is OK but nothing great. The rotating barrel does seem to help mitigate the recoil. It seems to remove the sharpness, leaving just a good healthy push. Accuracy was fine. The fired brass looked good. I was shooting a handload of 8.7 gr. of Longshot with a 180 gr. FMJ bullet. Next time I will try a hotter load with 9.3 gr. of Longshot.

COAL or mag springs need replaced.  Yeah, I know they are new mags.

I concur and I'm likely leaning to COAL. I have had great success with 1.250, what is yours?

1.260 runs in the glocks and witnesses just fine.  But only certain bullet shapes in the 1911.  It needs them 1.250 for reliability.

My load is a 180gr FMJ flat nose bullet loaded to a length of 1.250. This works fine in all of my other guns.

So have you had a chance to shoot it again? Tried a different bullet? I have shot a truncated nose bullet with no issues, I'll have to check to see what profile I have on hand. Which bullet is it your are having trouble with?

I got back to the range today. Anyone know how Eagle's customer Service is? I think this one is going back. I took more of my handloads and a box of SIG factory FMJ's. Both are 180gr round nose flat points. The SIG actually performed worse than my handloads. My handloads only failed to feed once per mag, the last round. The SIG ammo failed to feed on every round till it got down to 5 or 6 rounds and the would work fine until jamming on the last round again. I measured some SIG rounds when I got home and found the COALto vary between 1.242 and 1.260. I also had another problem today. It started dropping the mag. It did this with all mags and got worse the more I shot. At the end it was dropping the mag every 2 or 3 rounds. I made sure I was not hitting the release. I guess I will find out about Eagle's customer service.

Well that is unfortunate. I suspect their customer service is very good for repairs, as it has been very good for magazines and sights so far. Please keep us informed.
