I went out today to try out some handloads using 155gr. Precision bullets. It was also a chance to try my new Caldwell Chronograph. I had the 155gr. bullets loaded over 9.3gr of 800X and was hoping for around 1300. Before I checked with the handloads I wanted to send some PPU through since I new they should be around 1100 fps. The problem is that the PPU registered around 1280 fps on my chrono. My handloads also fell into that area, which would be great if I wasn't worried I was getting false results. I then fired some Winchester Silvertips as a second check, knowing that they are pretty consistent with their 1280 fps. They chronoed at around 1280 fps as well.
So, is my chrono off or can PPUs be that hot? I realize I have said that the readings were around 1280, but their was enough variation to show I was getting individual readings. I was just wondering if any member had any experience with the Caldwell and if could be off.
How close were you to the sensor screens??? 5', 8', 10' more? Sometimes the muzzle blast can disturb the readings and even powder particulate can blow ahead or the bullet and trip the sensors, Try at at least 8' but 10' - 12' or even 15', could be necessary.
It was around 10-12 ft. I'll try 15 ft. next time. Thanks
10' to 12' is usually good to go...Make sure your batteries are good and up to the proper voltage
Did you get the deluxe kit with the led lights or ?
Not sure how they are packaging this now. I have one, used more indoors. Usually outdoors I am using my friends that attaches to rife barrel.

The batteries were brand new and I was only using the sun shades. The sun was coming in at an angle and the shade from the sun shade was no where near the aperture. Could that be a problem and would using the LED IR lights help to correct it?
I am starting to wonder if the PPU ammo was loaded hotter than normal. As I have stated from my previous range trips the PPU brass was usually about 5 ft away. On this trip though the brass was 8-10 ft away. Is it possible that PPU has started loading the rounds hotter?

I have only used this with the lights. I've never used it with just the shades. So I think the answer is yes, but I'm not 100%.
