Title: New to 10's and loving it.
Post by: Trailrunner on April 12 2016 07:16:21 AM MDT
I've been carrying defensive handguns for the last 30 or so years. Depending on circumstances, environment and weather I'll rotate between my Wilson Combat BWC 1911, Glock 23 or Glock 43. Up until last week I've never even fired a 10mm before but since I spend so much time in the outdoors camping, hiking and running I decided to take the plunge and buy a Glock 29 SF. The main reason was due to a fatal black bear attack that took place in a wooded state park nearby. I know bear attacks are extremely remote in NYS but it got me thinking... The Glock 29 SF will be small enough to carry while hiking/camping and with the right ammo I think be suffient to handle the small statured black bears in downstate NY.

I took my new 29 to the range last weekend and was very surprised, after reading about the recoil and blast of the 10mm I was expecting it to be like lighting an M-80 firecracker off in my hand. But lo and behold after firing off a 10 rnd mag my hand was not reduced to a bloody stump, I found it to be a little anticlimactic! I realize that the factory target ammo and Winchester Slivertips that I used are probably allot more mild than the Underwood 165gr Gold Dots I have ordered but I found the Silvertips quite manageable and would even consider carrying my 29 in public as a self defense pistol. Overkill? I'm not sure...

A G29 loaded with silvertips is the same defensive round terminally as a full size 40 S&W.  It makes a great carry gun that doesn't compromise on velocity for barrel length.

Welcome to the addiction.

Trailrunner, Hello and Welcome to the forum and the wonderment of the 10mm.  The Glock 29 was my first of the Glock pistols and has served me quite well over the years.  Only thing I did was change to the Wolff non captive guide rods and dual 21 lbs spring set.  That and aftermarket Storm Lake 40S&W conversion and also Wolf Dist. 357Sig and 9x25 Dillon conversions because I am a handloader. ;D

Best regards!
