Title: Question about my RIA 10mm 1911
Post by: Critch on April 10 2016 06:38:29 PM MDT
Can I take the ambidextrous safety off of my RIA 1911 and put on a standard safety, without too much trouble?

Can you replace the safety?  Yes.

Without to much trouble?  That depends on your level of gunsmithing skill.

Any new safety will have to be fitted of course, but it's no more difficult than any other 1911.  I would also recommend replacing the sear pin as well as it is the retainer for the ambi side of the factory ambidextrous safety.

Thank you...I may just have to learn to like it..it's the first 1911 I've ever owned with an ambi-safety and it just feels different.

I don't mind the feel.  And since my wife is a southpaw, they are nice for her at the range.

But for carry, I don't like an exposed safety lever that can get bumped off.

Watch a couple of youtube videos and buy a safety.  Nothing to it really.

Also, learn how to detail strip your 1911 at the same time.  It is all very intimidating until you do it, then you wonder what all the fuss was.
