After a several year hiatus from subscribing for no reason other than being busy, I finally re-upped my subscription to Handloader magazine.
Got my first issue last Friday, with a Dan Wesson Razorback in 10mm on the cover. I anxiously flipped to the article, as Handloader in the past has had very positive 10mm articles.
I was NOT impressed.
The author opens by insinuating the available options for 10mm handguns is somewhat limited, and cites only Glock and a short handful of 1911 makers producing 10mm guns. Completely skipped Sig and EAA, as well as the very diverse line of RIA 10mm 1911 options.
Later in the same article, the author suggests that there is very little factory ammo available, listing Remington and Winchester as offering only one option, and Hornady and Federal offering only two options. Federal and Hornady both have three offerings, but I will give the author the benefit on those that at the time the article was written, they may not have had three. However, that does not excuse excluding Barnes (1), Buffalo Bore (4), CCI (1), COP (1) Cor-Bon(5), Double Tap (13), Glaser (2), Grizzly (3), HPR (2) or PRVI Partizan (1). And that is just what I found on Midway searching for 10mm Auto Ammo.
The handloads section was weak as well, basically regurgitating known loads for AA#9 and Blue Dot. They did include some data for CFE and for Power Pistol, but nothing that isn't in the known published data.
Short version is the article was poorly researched and offered nothing exciting to a 10mm handloader.
There were some good articles in the issue, one of the best about the truncated cone design. It provided some history about the TC that I didn't know, specifically that it was originally fielded by Germany during WW I in the 9mm Parabellum, and was withdrawn after complaints from the French and British that it violated the rules of the Hague convention. The wounds the TC design created were so much greater than round nose ammo that it was believed they had to be from hollow point designs.
Long story short (I know, that has sailed), if you see this on the news stand, it is worth picking up, but not for the 10mm article.
It sounds and reeks of 1911 Brainwashing as the magazines do to sell them...they don't do the 10mm and other guns any justice in the publications.... >:(
