Title: Friends son re loading
Post by: gadabout on March 06 2016 02:22:49 PM MST
Just heard a story that I think is interesting. A friend bought his older son a 10MM Glock for Christmas and he is a re loader of sorts. He didn't think he was getting enough power out of the 10MM loads so he "pumped it up" well as you can guess the gun came back and hit him in the head. No real damage but just makes you wonder about some guy's thinking.   Craig

Well there are things like physics and pressure dynamics that play into the safety of the gun and shooter... ::)

Good there was no real damage... I know a person that lost part of a finger from 'pumping up a load'

I have gotten a finger caught between the shell holder and the die before.  Glad it wasn't a decapping die, cause it would have pierced my finger.

But think of the story you could have told!

Yeah, sometimes my right hand doesn't really care if my left is out of the way or not.

Ah...Thanks for the interest I think!! I should say that my friend is 74 or so and his son is 45 or so and he should know better as he has been loading for years. I guess I should admit I had a case  blow on an overload myself way back when. This was before I understood the reality of recoil not being a good measure of a load level.  Ha Ha !!  Craig

edit to fix bad typing.

Sometime we can get complacent with things like setting up the scale or powder drop.  Sometimes we just need to double check or even triple check what work we have done.  Recently I was loading some 458 SOCOM and changed to a different powder charge weight, I reset the powder drop and the tenths wheel for the scale and then loaded the 20 cartridges.
That night while in my sleep, I awoke remembering that I had not increased the 10 grain adjustment weight on my beam scale.  So I had 20 perfectly hand weighed cartridges that were short by 10 grains...  This was the initial reason I had purchased my digital scale, as a quick double check reference. ::)

Remedy pulled them, resized without the decaper pin, then back to the powder drop & scale, to properly set the charge weights for each to be reloaded again.  In this situation the 10 grains under would have been a subsonic instead of the full loading.
