Title: Anyone using cast bullets in their Glock?
Post by: Willie on February 28 2016 11:04:01 AM MST
Hi, I am new to this site and was wondering if there are any members who are using cast bullets in their stock Glock #20??
I have ordered a 150 Grain Lyman 10MM mold and a matching sizer/lube for my #45 Lyman, but I have heard some skuttlebutt that Glocks do not like cast bullets, is there something I need to know??
Thanks, Willie

Brian Pearce did a nice piece in handloader last year on the Glock 22 using cast bullets. Both Oregon Trail and Linotype. With harder alloys, different lubes and powder coating cast bullets. They work fine. Just shoot a few and check leading if there is any.

Hello Willie, I shoot many cast bullets from my Glock factory barrels.  Here is what I will say, the bullets need to be sized at least 0.4015" and 0.4020" is even better with careful loading.  The Factory barrels are right at 0.4020" in the bore, so having the best bullet fit helps to properly seal and fit the polygonal rifling.  The 0.4005" and 0.4010" worked well from my S&W1006 , but now I feed it also with the 0.4015" bullets.

I use a straight wheel weight alloy (older 1980's and even earlier, some 1990 stuff) for mine.  They run about 12 to 16 BNH, and the may oburate (bump up) to finish filling the bore. I also use Carnuba Red (+2700 fps) lube from White Label lube it works well for my stuff.

Poly powdered paint helps to add a bit of thickness and keeps the lead from touching the bore and many are running these these days in the Glock barrels.

Best regards!  Hope you find the forum to your liking!  ;)

I shoot a good bit of lead in my Glocks.  As Shadow mentioned, keep em big, as Glock barrels are loose.  I load 175 grain Lee SWC, 180 grain NOE hollow-points and 200 grain NOE/205 grain Mountain mold WFN designs.

I shoot almost exclusively coated bullets from MBC. I've used quite a few in my Glock 17 (9mm) with no problems. I clean it after each use.  Just bought a Glock 40 MOS (10mm) and shot several hundred rounds through it with no bulging issues some have spoken about about.  I decided to get a KKM barrel and have found that after an hour of shooting the barrel is much cleaner than was the stock glock 10mm barrel.

Frankly, I don't know if having an aftermarket barrel makes any difference but would advise, at a minimum, to scrub your Glock barrel clean after each use.

I've had great results at the range with powder coated 180's from a Lee mold. I will hopefully try them on deer next season.

Glock barrels don't like soft lead, but hardcast bullets will work. You have to remember to check and clean the barrel frequently. Every 100 to 200 rounds. You can also fire a couple FMJ bullet through the barrel to clean the lead out.

I have used lead in my G20. I have a LEE 145 SWC and LEE 175 TL mold. I also have used LEE and Lyman .41 bullets sized down to .402. http://10mm-firearms.com/reloading-10mm-ammo/41-magnum-bullets-in-a-10mm/

Hi there everyone, I have ordered the Storm Lake barrel to just shoot the cast bullets through, the regular barrel I will use for the 135 grain, jacketed hollow point loads----- so again, thanks!

I shoot an occasional box of Hard Cast in a stock Glock 20SF. I keep the barrel clean and shoot  the Hard Cast at the end of the session. No problems.

Will be loading these to 1450 fps from the 870 20" Slug BBL with rifled sights...

I cast from MiHec mould both WFN and hollow points. Plain Base with one lube groove. They are very accurate and hit like a hammer. Testing of the hollow point I had very excellent performance on game.
