Hi all - new to the forum, and just wanted to share a data-point with you.
I recently took eleven different factory 10mm loads to the range, and shot 3 round groups from both my MechTech (16.25" barrel) and my G40 (6" barrel).
- The MechTech has a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot, and the G40 has stock iron sights.
- The G40 target was at 25 feet, and the MechTech target was at 50 feet (indoor range limit).
- Shooting was done standing (leaning) at a belly-high bench, with a molded tire-rubber rest supporting the fore-grip of the MechTech, and supporting my hands shooting the G40.
I am not a professional marksman; I am, however, quite pleased with my consistency and trigger discipline during this exercise.
The shooting was a blast (pun intended). The results were interesting, and occasionally surprising. I hope you find them interesting too.
Buffalo Bore 180 gr JHP - I have a note that this one kicked very hard from the pistol.
MechTech: 2.75"
G40: 1.5"
Buffalo Bore 220 gr HCFN - I have a note on each target that says "smokey", and on the pistol target that says "kicks hard"
MechTech: 5/8" single hole
G40: 4"
Team Never Quit 125 gr Frangible HP - I remember having high hopes for this one, but being disappointed by the results...
MechTech: 2"
G40: 6" long string (took six shots for this one, to make sure it wasn't my fault... it wasn't)
Team Never Quit 155 gr SCHP - This was the winner of the day; not the best from the MechTech (marginally), but easily the best when both are considered
MechTech: 0.5" single hole
G40: 0.75"
Hornady Duty 175 gr Flexlock - Excellent in the MT (smallest 3 rd group of any load from the rifle, and all dead center of the bullseye), decent in the G40
MechTech: 1/3" single hole
G40: 2"
Hornady Custom 180 gr XTP - actually grouped better from the G40, which I didn't expect
MechTech: 2"
G40: 1.75"
Sig Sauer Elite 180 gr V-Crown JHP - Decent performer in both, not great compared to others
MechTech: 1.5"
G40: 2"
PMC Bronze 200 gr FMJ-TC - easily the worst performer out of the G40, not great from the MechTech
MechTech: 2.5"
G40: 7"
HSM Bear Load 200 gr FMJ - another poor performer from the pistol
MechTech: 1.75"
G40: 5"
HPR HyperClean 180 gr FMJ - Good performer; not the best, but certainly not the worst... I would buy this again
MechTech: 1"
G40: 2"
Armscor 180 gr FMJ - Easily the best performer for the money, this is now my go-to practice ammo; got mine at Cabelas for $24 / 50 rd box (I've seen it cheaper elsewhere and online)
MechTech: 0.5" single hole
G40: 1.5"
Keiichi, welcome to the forum! Thanks for the range report, yes different bullets seem to act differently in various barrels.
The HCFN are usually not large enough in diameter for the Glock Factory barrels, the like Cast Bullets at least 0.4015" and even 0.4020" for best performance. The cast bullets I work with, I size at 0.4015" for mine and the alloy is a straight wheel weight so the are a medium hardness and tend to "bump up" to fit the bore.
The frangible stuff is likely to also be too small for may actually start to smear in the polygonal rifling.
All in all I'd say the rest were doing very well... :D
Glad to be here :)
I appreciate the insight re: the HCFN and the TNQ 125s; I had a feeling the two extremes of the 10mm spectrum would need some fairly extensive dialing in before they started to shine. Not having gel or a chrono to test, it's just speculation, but I'd bet the MechTech was pretty severely over-driving the 125s.
I plan to start reloading for 10mm at some point in the near future, and at I'll probably end up dialing in some HCFN for hunting.
For now, I'm just having great fun at the range :D
