Title: Happy Mid-winter (Groundhog Day).
Post by: Captain O on February 02 2016 11:54:19 AM MST
Do we really need a Groundhog, or will a couple of pounds of ground chuck be sufficient?

Being raised in pig country in the mid west, I have eaten lots of ground hog, but never groundhog.

Some people are willing to eat Marmot, some aren't. I know a man from Indiana that's willing to eat them if they are young specimens.

True story.

Don't have to convince me.  I have had squirrel, raccoon, and other rodents.

When I was a young boy (14 in 1969) we would cruise down the backroads of the Western Wilamette Valley (southwest of Corvallis, OR near Bellfountain, OR) during both mid to late summer and wait for Gray Squirrels to sit up on the roadside fenceposts. We three brothers would lie down in the back of our 1968 Rambler Rebel station wagon. When the moment was right, we would pop up and shoot them in the head. (Heck, they were usually no more than 40 feet away).  One of us would jump out, grab our prize and stuff it into an empty Puffed Wheat drawstring bag and take off down the road! Mom would clean them and string them up on a roasting grate (over a shallow pan, of course) and cook them up for the family.

You would be surprised how quickly a family of six can scarf down 24 oven-roasted Gray Squirrels with flour/milk dripping gravy!  :D

I have big oak trees in my backyard. Loaded with squirrels. I wish I could shoot them but I have close neighbors. My next door neigbor traps them and eats their legs.

Wolfie: If you buy some .22 Longs and get a little plastic soda bottle, use duct tape to affix it to the end of the rifle barrel. (Make certain that it doesn't block the iron sights of your .22) Cut a hole in the bottom of the plastic bottle so that the bullet can safely pass through.  You may then kill as many squirrels as you can! Change the plastic bottle when it stops muffling the rifle's report.

Destroy (burn) all the material immediately after use, so that you aren't accused of manufacturing an illegal supressor (a Federal offense).

Go nuts.
