Title: Hornday pistol rotor.
Post by: RustyRudder on February 01 2016 01:39:15 PM MST
I got my Hornady pistol rotor the other day. I went to use it today and found out even though its rated for charges between .5 gr to 17 gr. It will not throw over 11 grains of Blue dot.I'm reloading 155gr xtp's so it isn't any help to me right now.It should come in handy when I get some heavier grain bullets.Just my 2 cents.

You might could do a double drop setup two have charge weights if you will...however this could get you into a bad habit.

Here is my take on using the upper level loadings, hand weighing on a quality balance beam scale pays dividends as you go for precise consistencies.  ;D  I set my Uniflow to drop as close to the charge weight without going over that I am loading and trickle to level the scale.  This is the most controllable part of the handloading process...

The rating is probably for high density ball powders.  Flake or stick powders leave more space in the volume.

I've been using the RCBS Little Dandy for years
I have 30 Rotors, 00 - 28
Yeah, I know, "there isn't a 27 or 28", but I have made them myself
By using one or two together, I can throw most any weight I want, Pistol and Rifle

Blue Dot is a flake type cut powder, and sometimes those powders do not throw accurately in an automeasuring powder thrower. Some brands seem to work better than others, I do not know how a Hornady works with this powder. You might be better served by finding a different ball cut powder, those seem to work the best.

I'm using the rifle rotor.I have it tossing 12.1 to 12.3 grains then trickling the rest. :(
