Title: Need some help picking new scope rings
Post by: fernpatch on January 24 2016 04:09:12 PM MST
Long story short I have been having accuracy problems with my new to me Remington 740. I Started checking the scope mount and rings out and found the previous owner buggered up the threads on the rings.

So now I need some recommendations on affordable but durable rings to mount a 1 inch diameter scope to my 30.06. The rifle has a weaver type base that thankfully was properly installed.

I have had great luck with Burris XTR rings.  They about $50.

Thanks for the tip SQL. I will check them out.

As a side not I was able to identify the rings that failed. They were UTG.

I have used a good bit of UTG stuff, and generally found it to be pretty solid.

Scope rings are a tricky item.  They can be strong enough to properly do the job and stand up to lots of abuse as far as knocking around, and still be easy to tear up with an improper install.

Remember that torque numbers on scope rings are usually measured in inch-lbs, and feel not nearly tight enough.  I think that is what gets lots of guys, younger versions of me included.  The crank them down like the disc break carrier retainer bolts on their truck, which is way too hard.

I hear you on install making a difference. I learned the importance of using blue loctite on scope mounts with my mosin nagant when I was about 19. First and only time I had a scope hit me in the face.

These rings have been stellar on an early T3 for me.
