Title: Hammer and punch set
Post by: Intercooler on January 08 2016 04:13:10 PM MST
Time to invest in these much needed tools! Anyone have a suggestion for a good non-marring hammer to tap sights, etc... with and possibly with a good punch set? I noticed Cabela's had a few in there the other day, but wanted to ask first.

starrett punches and brownells hammers....1/4 aluminum key stock like what Dawson ships works pretty good for drifting sights

Harbor freight.
That's where I purchased my current stuff and the hammer started going soon after I got it home. It's now on it's last leg coming apart.

I just use a cheap set of stanley punches from wal mart for most my work, and either my old plumb 8 ounce ball pein hammer or one of my body hammers.. depends on whether i can find the plumb or not.
just use a few layers of a good masking tape(i use 3m green autobody tape) to protect whatever you are working on, there is no such thing as 100 non marking tools in the real world.. no matter what the marketing departments say.

I bought my punches at harbor freight and they are going strong.  I had a hammer already.

I would look at your local hardware store for a brass and nylon hammer.  Nothing gunsmith specific about them.

Hey IC:
I've used this set for years:
http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/general-gunsmith-tools/punches/deluxe-hammer-punch-set-prod7996.aspx
All three Hammer (interchangeable) Faces and a nice selection of Punches
It's a place to start
Then I've added other Pin Punches as they become needed

I have a set of Starrett. Nice.

I also have, a beater set and brass set of straight punches.

And a set of roll pin punches - an insertion set and a removal set. These are vital if you have say an AR and you don't want to Bubba Marr it.

I have a couple hammers in varying weights and types.

Works great. Believe it or not but the wooden box works great for holding various parts/slides/frames when being 'punched'.
A 1911 with the grip bushings fit flat if you turn it a certain way. It's a very durable set.

Beware of the newer Starrett punches. I think they are overly soft and start puffing out with minimal force.
